How do I stop my synth playing the drum sounds on my MPC1000

Hi, I recently re-bought an mpc1000. I love it but I'm trying to make songs using that plus my synth.

Obviously certain pads are linked to the MIDI notes that get sent out by my synth but I want to STOP this because I'm getting out of place samples playing everywhere where I don't need or want them and it's driving me CRAYyyzee.

Does this make sense?

I have checked the manual but I can't find how to detach the 2 or indeed if it's even possible.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

any help/advice would be MASSIVEly appreciated.

Unplug the MIDI cable.

You don't need to send MIDI data from the synth as far as I can tell from what you've said you're using it for.

If anything you'd want to send MIDI data from the MPC to the synth. Unless I'm missing something, you might need to explain your setup a little more.

Turn PROGRAM on your midi track to OFF.

If you leave a sample program(example: Program 1) on the track that you are recording midi on(synth), it will trigger those samples when you hit certain keys on the synth. You don't necessarily need to unplug the midi. But you need to understand the diff between midi and audio type tracks.

Speaking of legendary... try this sometime if you have JJ os

take any sound/sample that you like and chop it down into a single note. while viewing that sample in edit mode, turn loop to "on" and set loop type to " <--> " so when you hold down the pad it loops fairly smoothly. You may need to adjust the start/end points.

Assign sample to pad in program mode,
set pad to NOTE ON so it will play a sustained loop when you hold down the pad.
move your cursor over to "TUNE" and hit the "window" key
Go through the next 2 windows (click "Auto" and "Do it")

This will put the sound on all 64 pads, tuned chromatically,
Name the program(Example: synthmatic) and get ready to play.

If you have a synth connected through MIDI you can now do this

Example:
Track: 1
Program: synthmatic
assign midi (recreating your problem from earlier)

Turn your synth main volume down and voila, you can play the padbanks from your MPC with your synth keys.

The fun part comes next. Use gobal program edit mode on the mpc to mess with the filters/tuning/LFO's/FX/Attack/Decay for all 64 notes at once. Shape the sound to your liking.

I often take harsh noise/blips and layer them together(up to 4 on a pad) and use this method to make custom synth programs out of basically nothing. There are endless ways to make unique sounds this way.

Combine this with QLINK trickery and come up with some pretty crazy shit.

if you have both midi in and midi out running to your mpc from your synth just turn "local" from on to off on your synth, the mpc will trigger the notes via midi for you

you know another way to stop this (synth playing drums), is to create a blank program (call it midi) in the mpc and set the notes chromatically starting from B0 up to D6 i think, dont assign any samples.

Leave it blank, load the blank program when you want to use your synth.
