do you use an octatrack?

who uses the octatrack? do you like it as much as your mpc? places where it shines, any downfalls you've found?

Sold an mpc1000 for it. They are pretty different. The OT is almost more like an 8 voice synth/glitch cut up, x/o sequencer. MPC is great for real time recording, hitting pads.

thats cool, would you ever do a full sample based composition on it, or would you just leave that for the mpc? i had watched a few videos, the workflow looked pretty different, but it still looks cool.

I don't work with loops myself but yeah you could absolutely do full compositions just using the OT. Think of it being an 8 track approach (or less, if you are using the 8th track as the master and others as sends) rather than having available the track count of an mpc. Having said that you'll find that your compositions get full very quickly with few elements.

The 'live' beatmaking that is great on the MPC is not on the OT imo. The workflow is completely different and it takes sometime to figure out the OT. OT is o/x sequencing so more akin to the roland drum machines than anything else. The other major difference is automated timestretching on the OT, which tends to direct your focus in other areas, namely, modulation using the fx, slicing and transitions between 'scenes' which gives you a kind of wavetable like synthesis. The fx are far above the quality of those on the MPC.

From a hip-hop perspective, I guess if you like early Prefuse 73 stuff you would really dig the OT.

It's a great machine, probably not for everybody, try it out first (you will need a while), read the manual and go from there.

i see, thanks for the info, im not really considering one at the moment, i just got a 1k thats being sent to me to accompany my 2500 that i already own, i just wanted to know a little info about it.
