Using a Midi to USB adapter

I have always used my MPC by creating a drum part, then soloing each track and using the "Stereo Outs" on the rear of the unit, (via guitar cables) to record each track onto its own individual track in Pro Tools, where I can then treat and mix each track separately.

I have never used it with midi, however.

Recently I got a midi to USB adapter that I use for my keyboards to access my virtual instruments.

I tried using the USB adapter from my MPC midi outputs - to my Imac - and am unable (so far) to get any sound into my session.

Has anyone done this before? Using a midi to USB adapter - to record into PT?

Midi is not Audio my friend, Midi can help you synchronize so that your tracks are all playing and stopping at the same time. You might want to go to Preferences and Synchronization menu in Pro Tools to set that up.

I'm not asking about midi. When recording to "instrument" tracks in PT (through USB)
connection it interprets the signal as midi data, but that's not what I'm asking.

I'm asking if anyone has recorded using the Midi to USB adapter, using the MPC as a "USB" recording device?

if your not talking about MIDI but are using MIDI cable then its a bit confusing dont you think. MIDI cables are used for MIDI, not sound. The MPC can not use USB for MIDI, just file transfer, so if you are not using MIDI out or in on your MPC and you are using the USB then yeh its not goin to work, because its not meant to do that.
If on the other hand you are using MIDI out into USB of computer, then you will have to make sure you are sending MIDI clock and so mac and MPC is synced.

if you aren't asking about MIDI, then your question seriously makes no sense at all.

i think you want to record audio, but you want the midi to usb device to tell your computer when to start recording, is that what you mean?

I use one to lock my mpc to Reaper (or any other DAW) so when i hit play on the MPC it starts playing my DAW at the same rate.

yes, thanks for the replies. It's not really about telling the computer when to start recording.

I'm a little confused myself cause I don't know if this can be done. It's basically using the MPC as a USB controller, kind of like Maschine.

the "midi to USB adapter" which I just purchased allows me to use my Casio keyboard, which has midi ports but no USB. So I plug the midi-plug into the keyboard and the other end (USB) into the USB on the Mac. The Casio keyboard now becomes my USB controller and I can access all my virtual instruments.

I was curious about taking the midi adapter out of the Casio keyboard - and putting it into one of the midi ports on the MPC, (don't ask me which one) and I would be able to access my virtual drums in Pro Tools 9, via the MPC.

Or even play sounds off the CF card. It's just a matter of inputting the MPC samples via USB, and not the stereo outs, or the spdif, into PT.

Confusing? Probably cause it can't be done, and i am unable to really explain myself, so I will let it go and keep experimenting with it.

do a search here about midi basics then you will be fine. You should get MIDI in and out from MPC to computer, but you might not have option. So gve it a try and see if DAW sends and recieves your MPC MIDI, as thats what you want for control and syncing

ahh i got ya man.

You can do this, and it works the same way i posted above but you want to record midi data in Pro tools not audio.

Have the midi out plugged into say port A.
In mpc (mode) pad 9 (im pretty sure haha) go to sync page, you want it set to MTC 25 and for send MMC you want ON. (though it depends what you want to use as a master clock or a slave?) i personally would be sequencing the midi into MPC and having the mpc triggering a VST within pro tools, that way your mpc is still the "MASTER" clock./

In pro tools im not so sure. i imagine you would have to set up a channel of MPC to be called channel 1A (in JJos1 you can do this from the bottom right of the main screen) and then in Pro tools insert a midi channel to receive all data from track 1A.

Again, depends largely on what is your master and what is slave. If you use Pro Tools as master you automatically lose MPC swing as the mpc tempo is then set by protools.

What i do my man, is have MPC hooked up to FL Studio (using a roland UM-ONE), and i use my mpc as a midi controller to get my midi notes into FL, but i keep FL slaved to my MPC, so hitting Play on the mpc forces FL to play, not the other way around.

To record it all...............that shit is complicated so i'll save it for another thread.
