i would say buy another cf card and try that,
go for a sandisk card they never fail in the 2000xl, here's the one i bought an works perfect. hope this sorts out your problem.

i was stumped too with this problem, but sayin that nobody suggested it could be a cf card problem, an now that imakebeats1999 went through everything else, cables an more than one cable, master an slave setting's an the o\s from 1.14 to 1.20 an nothing worked for the fam member. we gotto support the family an get this MPC workin the way it should be.

I just tried again and again with the Ultra SanDisk 4GB CF card and its still a NO GO...but now I am wondering if its because I am using the same black and red cable hook up that was used for the original floppy drive

BUT this wire right here down below came with the CF Reader and only the little piece fits but the other 2 ends don't

Your only concerned with the red/black (5 volts).

You don't need the yellow black (12 volts).

Splice together whichever wires are connected to the 2 ends that you need. Electric tape and done.

Your Compact Flash reader is a passive device, so your issue likely lies within your Compact Flash card.
Not all Compact Flash cards are the same, even by the same manufacturer.

You need a Compact Flash card that is a "fixed" disk not removable disk. The mode is set by the manufacturer.

It's been covered in the threads in the past, but some info on checking your particular card is here:
