was bumping this beat the other day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjpoqHnSRGA (dillas remix of janet jacksons got til its gone). and noticed that the wah wah sample is in 3/4 time but the actual beat is in 4/4 time.

I've never heard this in hip hop music, ever. or maybe i have but never really put two and two together. anyway do people do this often in music? have different instruments in different time sig?

dilla and the ummah did the original, but they werent credited, so dilla just remixed the track.

^^^theres the original one, its real dope as well

anyone got any info on these polyrhythm joints? they seem real f***kin confusing.

so a 3 over 4 polyrhythm would mean it takes 12 beats OR 12 BARS of music to loop,, right?

honestly aside from dilla, idk if ive heard these types of joints in hip hop music.

I must admit I was struggling to really hear the sound being in 3/4. But because they're both in x/4 time then surely they can loop once per bar?

If you're interested in lots of strange time signatures listen to/research some pieces by Dave Brubeck and his quartet. His is the first name that sprang to mind, he's noted for that type of experimentation.

^^^Well no that would mean that the entire song loops every three bars, or twelve beats of music. If there's a polyrhythms consisting 3/4 and 4/4, the 1 beat will lineup every 12 beats...notice dillas wah wah filtered sample hits on the 1st kick drum ever 3 bars of music.

I've always been fascinated by dillas music, I think he's head and shoulders above any other producer, sh** like this is not done often in hip hop music. I think the only other song that comes to mind is I think "electric relaxation"...I think that may have a polyrhythms in it.

^^ yeah sounds like it could be...honestly i counted both 3/4 and 6/4...im not great with time sig and music theory.

anyone wanna elaborate as to what time sig the wah is in? i thought its in 3/4, but it seems to me it could be either 3/4 or 6/4.

it sounds like the drums and the track itself are in 4/4 while the wah loops on 3/4 or 6/4

its a matter of definition really

for me, it makes most sense to see it as 6/4 (or 6/8, whatever)

the groove of the chords is mostly 1234-- (three quarter notes, one dotted half note), drums in isolation to me could be 2/4 (with variations of course, it loops after 48 beats, second snare is dropped)
played over the chords this puts the '2' of the drums on the four of the chords (as opposed to the 1 of both sounding together at the start), so 3/4 doesnt really make sense, you'd always be counting two drastically different bars after one another (kicksnarekick and snarekicksnare)

put together, counting in groups of 6 makes the structure easiest to grasp

I'd say the TC setting in the MPC would look like this: 1/8 (3)
But I dought thats how he did it
You could achieve a similar effect with LFO settings..
Dubsteppers do it all the time.. Just not as beautiful as in the og posted song... Thanks for that man, that was amazing :)

I'm pretty sure thats just a 3 bar loop in 4/4 time, similar to the stakes is high beat.

dillas wild with time sig, idk any other producers who really f*** with time sig like this dude, let alone make 3 bar loops.

^^^ this loops got me confused as hell! is it in 5/4?

it sounds like the first bar of the loop is in 4/4 but then the second is in 5/4???

in the booklet for the album he says the loop is in 5/4 but when i try counting it it don't add up. i find myself counting the first bar of music in 4/4 n then the second bar of the loop in 5/4...im counting 9 total beats in the loop..what the hell is this considered?

confusing
