Paranoia - will my vinyl collection fall through someone's c

here is a funny one - I've always been the paranoid type, and since my vinyl collection grew over 4000+ 12"s every time I move to a new rental I'm ALWAYS paranoid if I stack too manly of my storage box's in one corner I'm gonna wake up to the sound of them crashing through the floor into someone's living room part of me knows this is just bought on by my past of drug abuse induced mental health issues.

today to make way for a desk to put my music kit on I have been stacking REALLY high with my crates in one corner of the room and I can't stop staring at them until the early hours

how have you vinyl heads found storage your stage? you want to scare me with tails of lives lost due to impact from the collection of a DJ living above someone??

I live above another DJ, and he pays sh+t R&B until the early hours, so am telling myself it would kinda be far from a shame regardless!!

I once thought about this situation too. But lets say you place a two 5x5 Expedit (can be loaded up with 2000 records each) on one side of your room. Depending on the pressing a records weights between 80 and 180 gramm. most of them are 100 or 120. So to make it easy lets say their weight is 100 gramm.

4000 records * 100 gramm = 400.000 gramm or 400 kilogramm or something like 880 pounds.
Not THAT many IMO. Ok you need to add the cover and maybe your records have those cover plastic sleeves......
I guess 4000 records + cover + extra plastic + Expedit could probably weight around a ton

It sounds like a great collection though. Not everyone has a collection large enough to pose as an architectural safety hazard.

My collection hasn't grown that large so I have nothing useful to add.

think I saw the pic of your collection in those ikea units - I pretty much figured if yours was ok mine would be too made me feel better

In London we mostly live in shifty house conversions, were they make like 4 flats out of 1 house, and you always wonder how tuff the floor is, I haven't lived in a place with concrete floor for years - mind you I lived in attic conversion once that felt like it had been done on the cheap and that took my records for a year no probs.

@Undertow - its all cool, and I put a lot of love into collecting over 10 years, but I tend to move house every year (to a smaller flat), and that ish takes up a lot of room, and if you ever move abroad (like my miss is trying to get me to do) you got to pay several hundred a month to store them. they can be a bind sometimes - often you got to live in bigger places for more rent too!!

all that said, if I had more cash, I'd still be buying DAILY - but for now I've chilled on it.

but provided the structure is sound and not rotting away or infested with termites, floor structures, even those made of timber are fairly tough.

under the floor surface, you normally have joists that span the floor from one wall to the next, and they're normally placed every meter or so. they would go from one load bearing wall to the opposite and not from the front to the back,.. so they really only span a relatively short distance. atleast vinyl is dead weight so theres no movement stress.

i would line the 4k of vinyl along the load bearing wall where the joists are attached to the wall, they'd be the strongest there.

normally the older houses were over engineered so they should be stronger,... provided they've been maintained,.. if not,.. all bets are off

a picture of the house, from the outside and the inside would probably be more useful than a picture of your records.

Thanks for this - floor is laminated, so can't see the jousts, but am making sure to spread the weight around the room a bit regardless.

have gotten it out of my system a bit now - I figure if it happened it would be down the the maintanance of the property, like you said.

once my layout is sorted I'll post in cribz and you guys can judge for yourselfs.
