faster way to adjust samples? (timestretch and pitch)

How long have you been using it till now?

Bouta month but I been makin beats for bout 7 months now
Mainly on fruity loops tho

aw man... I was making beats with FL for 3 years. Then got sickof it and wanted something else.. found out about the MPC and got one in 08..
It takes more than a month to really understand that machine.
But hey.. I'm not gonn persuade you to nothing. Just saying it takes time.
Me; I'm am absolutley NOT regretting the change, and don't want to miss this.
On the long term, I feel it did step up my beatmaking.

I can't vouch for the jump from FL to an MPC but I felt alienated when I used a friend's ASR10 coming straight off the 60 and the 2K.

Such an ill powerful sampler the ASR but you can't jump into it with an MPC mindset!

What's up my dude I agree with everyone here, you have to give it a little time to become part of your workflow. None the less there are some ways to make it easier especially if your using OS2XL.... You could make a perfect loop point with your sample in sample edit then convert it to a patch phrase, lay it down. So now when you change the tempo the sample stays in sync. This way works really well because you have a lot of control the down side is the sample will be switched to mono but if thats not a biggie I wouldn't sweat it. Also, again make a perfect 2-16 etc. bar loop with the sample edit, select timestretch then hit a pad and count how many beats are in your loops measures ie. 1meas.=4 beats 2meas.=8 beats
etc. Then put that number in the beat field of the timestretch window, then hit manual. Now where it says original tempo, that is what your tempo should be or close to it. Go to the main screen and set that as the tempo, jump back to sample edit chop the sample and save it as a chopped sample with the release set to 25-30. Now record the chops with quantize set to 100 and swing @ 50. This should have you set now just adjust the tempo so that it plays smoothly and once that's done go into program and adjust the pitch. Remember if you slow the tempo lowering the pitch can smooth things out. Anyway I know its a lot but I hope it helps. Good luck homie....

The way I do it is time stretch in djay on the iPad and then sample parts via the MPC like a turntable, its probably not the best method but it works for me. Chopping up is definately slower, since I could just chop stuff up in Recycle in less time but there's something satisfying about using a MPC and doing it there.

I'm gonna go along and suggest what a couple others have kinda said. You gotta look at the MPC differently, I got really frustrated with mine at first but you just gotta keep at it... the MPC has a distinct sound for a lot of reasons but a big one is that it's a pretty raw machine with what some people would consider significant limitations. The beauty of it is that you will become a much better producer and will understand sound more if you have to get creative rather than rely on a quick fix like time stretch or whatever, that function is pretty horrible on the MPC anyways.

Start thinking about how you can flip a sample in terms of what you already know how to do on the mpc rather than what you might've done with FL or whatever, it'll pay off and if nothing else I guarantee you'll learn some things that'll stick with you.

If you want to timestretch / Morph samples, then I don't think MPC is for you.
You should learn how to chop samples on MPC. Once you get it, it should not take 1 hour.
If you want to just loop up 1 bar samples, for example, I don't see why you have to use MPC for it (you don't have to ditch FL studio.)

i don't really have many problems with it.

I can usually identify the original tempo of the sample in a matter of seconds by using the tap tempo, record the sample on the first beat of the sequencer, then tweek the tempo to get it perfect. Usually takes a minute or two. Then all you have to do is time stretch it in edit mode to the desired tempo. If its a drastic tempo change it may indeed kill the quality so you have to use a combination of methods.

From what i'm hearing though it sounds like you should jus timestretch it in fruity and simply sample the timestretched version back into the mpc from your computer.

Just run audio out of your PC into the record in of the MPC

You are maybe just over-thinking, as the others implicitly pointed out.

extract a 4/4 out of your sample, assign it to play MONO (to have it re-triggering when you hi-hit the pad) and place it on the DOWN beat of a 2measures sequence.

Adjust the seq tempo until it loops. That's your sample tempo.

To slower it pitch-down, to increase the speed pitch it up. If you really need to time-stretch, just do it, the option is there in EDIT mode.

Now I understand perfectly this is not how it use to work in FL, BUT...

If you do like this in a very short time your ears will start to pick up sample's bpm unconsciously BEFORE you sample them, and all your material, when related to the same composition will turn around the same tempo (mind the 2:3 relation when you pitch up/down 5/7 semitones... it's handy as knowing that from 33rpm to 45 it's 5,20 semitones, especially working with samples which are a lot of bpms far from each other) , which will avoid you to time-stretch tout-court.

That's how it works, you will learn to play the MPC as you learn ANY other instrument, wrapping your head around and having the workflow becoming an automatic thing.
