you know what though? you could technically do that with the ren some time down the line... now that would be neat. Take some micro ATX main board, create an extension to the ren's casing ... and build a computer in it.. mount a small LCD display as small and compact as 7" and mount it somewhere on the ren body you added to..

boom, standalone ren. Hell, if you are afraid of viruses... put gum in the ethernet port.

OK debauch MAKE ME A STANDALONE MPC REN AND ILL PAY U 2299 DEAL ??

Honestly that's a genius idea. If you can't have it be standalone, I'll **** connect the smallest computer known to man! LOL

I wonder how Akai will respond if and when their software is torrented, and cracked for use with another controller? Or for use on it's own.

There are downsides to owning hardware created almost 2 decades ago...but they are still useful. I dropped several hundred dollars on VSTs in the past few months and about to drop some more as I am getting UADs Neve bundle and well as their analog tape plugin. The MPC Ren got be excited about making music again....and its just a hobby for me.

As far as what Akai will do if/when their software is torrented or cracked....I assume the same thing any other company would do......

Well yes of course, particularly with older synths and tape-based products that need regular maintenance, servicing and tuning. I simply mean that I don't see standalone units being entirely replaced by VSTs ever. There will simply be better ways to use the two in conjunction, which will only highlight the advantages of each more. Either way I'm glad you've rekindled your passion!

I'd be interested to hear how your tape plugin sounds! Is it for saturation or tape-based delay effects too?

The reason I mention torrenting and cracking specifically is that we all know it will happen. It's only a matter of time. But then that will leave Akai very much out of pocket and possibly quite sour knowing they're supplying updates to people who haven't actually invested in their product.

When this happened to Apple with Logic back in version 5 or whenever they dropped PC support completely! I'm not suggesting Akai will give up at this stage, but I'd be interested to see their reaction. What do you think they would do?

People that use cracked software are not the ones that would buy the product anyway. I personally don't see much use of the software without the hardware. Akai will do what all other companies do....there will be some form of copy protection. Every company that produces software has the same concern and use the same or similar methods to reduce cracks of their products. So its pointless to give the potential of this software being cracked further thought IMO.

I plan on buying the Studer A8000 multichannel tape recorder plugin, Ampex ATR 102 Mastering Tape recorder plugin, and one of the Neve bundles. I am buying these because they are highly regarded for their "warm, natural" sound....noting that I have not heard them personally. I haven't tracked a beat in years...but as I said before, this new product has me excited and I plan on spending more time with my hobbies.

As far as hardware...it will never die. If Akai simply came out with a software MPC, I wouldn't give it much thought. But they have went all out to design the MPC Ren. All the feedback I received is that it is well built...like an MPC not a glorified MPD.

I disagree. If the software wasn't available on torrent sites then if they wanted it they would HAVE to buy it. The fact they've searched for it and downloaded means they want it in some respect, they're simply not prepared to save up and pay for it. They simply use the "oh I wouldn't have bought it anyway" bullsh*t to justify theft. IMO.

You're right though I will not dwell on that point any more. There was a dedicated thread on that not long ago, and there's a lot of different opinions on the boards as you'd expect.

My point is, once it's cracked then surely that opens the floodgates for people to use the software with any controller that has the ability to be assigned to it. For example a controller they already have such as an MPD. Although I suppose that depends on how many functions are freely assignable within the software.

However, if the software was freely assignable once cracked then that would surely hurt hardware sales? That is my concern for Akai and this new line. At least you couldn't torrent a 5000

On average how much do these tape plugins cost? I've used Vintage Warmer before and a couple of real tape devices, but I'd be interested in anything you could recommend once you've tried them out.

I see no point in continuing that subject matter.....moving on.

The tape plugins I mentioned are $350 ea. The Neve Bundle is between $400-$1000. I have never used these types of plugins before as I don't mix. I have been happy two tracking a beatz with a little EQ as it was just for my own personal enjoyment. I will definitely give my soooo non-expert opinion on anything I purchase. This is really an expensive investment I am making. The Apollo interface that will be running those plugs is already $2000.

monsta is on some next shit i dont get it

scooby is clutching at straws to find any reason not to like the ren just because it does not confirm to ur own personal needs.

there is a reason why maschine has been so popular over the past 3 years and akai were very heavy footed in they response but they have finally seen the light.

but all that shit about torrents yes it defo happens but by ur rationale none of the software companies should put out anything cause someone is is gonna crack it and share it on the web.

'Lots of people still on XP and an old as version OSX.'

Simple reason for this, DJ, is because about 90% of my virtuals and plugins still aren't 64 bit compat ? I'd love to take advantage of the higher ram option under 64, but, in truth, I manage just fine on my Pc with XP and only 3 gig of ram. Infact, I rarely get near 60% of system use in any given composition ... so, the way I look at it is that I have plenty of head room for a while yet.

I know MPCs...I use MPCs...and I will own the MPC Ren as soon as it hits the streets like every other MPC before it.

I have been a forum member longer than 99% of you guys/gals...and even introduced this forum to a lot of members. Regardless of what anyone thinks of my contributions...it will not change my approach here. Foe me.....Don't read my comments if you find them boring.

If you don't like what the MPC Ren brings to the table...I respectfully ask you to consider taking your b!tching somewhere else...perhaps to the JJ OS Forum where everyone lives in bliss. Whatever you decide...find something positive to talk about for a change.....your negativty towards me, Akai, and the new MPCs is certainly not contributing anything of value to this forum..IMHO.
