Ensoniq ASR-10 help, for ASRonians.

I know it just emulates the floppy. I just want something more modern. Computers now a days don't have a floppy drive and disks are kind of hard to come by. Also you can obviously hold more on SD than you can a floppy.

Now back to the mounting, I know the display is removable from the drive but I didn't know the buttons were too. Can you post a pic of your asr with the emulator?

Yeah you're right. But as it is an emulator, you still save your samples (or whatever) in floppy disks, though the floppies are represented as .hfe files on the SD card. You can't you just save or load everything from one single map on the SD-card. You still need to load up an .hfe (read floppy disk) in the ASR and from there load your instrument files.

Well, the buttons are not removable in that way, they are soldered on the board. You will need a soldering iron to remove them, or add your own.

...but if I have an instrument file that is spread across two floppy disks, instead of having to load/save it from two different places, when using the SD floppy emulator, you can load/save it as a single file right?

Obviously it can be loaded/saved to and from the same SD card, but can it be done as one file? Or would you need to save it as two floppy images?

A .hfe file is as big as a floppy disk so you would have to spread it across two .hfe files, as with ordinary floppy disks.

FD - so what you are saying is that no matter how big the SD card is, the biggest file you can save is 1.44mb (which is the size of one floppy disk) aka .hfe file. and the advantage of having an SD card floppy emulator is so you don't have to have a bunch of floppyies all over the place. the SD card will act as case to hold all of your floppies in one place. so in a sense, i can hold about 8,000 floppies on a 32gb sd card

Yeah, you could describe it like that. That was about what I meant when I said it only emulates the floppy drive, nothing more, nothing less. And it still take as long time as a floppy to load. It even emulates the sound of a floppy loading

I'm sure I read once on some forum that there was a program that enables you to take the sound libraries from any keyboard you hook the ASR-10 up to...

In my mind this program was called "mimic" but i can't find any information about it.

Did I dream this?

I thought whoever wrote and discussed it said that it wasn't just for ASR-10 either meaning it should be a pretty widely used thing...

Hey Guys still new to the ASR-10 game.. i got a question about this DI-10 I/o Board can someone give me a little break down on why this thing is so hard to find? i've ready if i want to trigger samples (i have thousands drum samples on my comp) i Need this board to get them on the asr-10...

I guess my question is.. where can i get this.. do I even have a shot at one? if not how can i work around this and get my drum samples from my comp into the asr-10

Record them using the analog inputs of the ASR? Maybe you'll get a nice surprise by the sound of the AD converter.

regarding the ASR 10 and CF drives.

I'm kinda new to CFs on the ASR, but if replacing the floppy with an internal you need the iodata bridge (a specific one, not any old iodata bridge), NOT the Acard used in MPCs and other samplers. reason for this is the boot file needs to be on a CF card if you get rid of floppy drive, the iodata bridge is fast enough for the ASR to recognize the boot file, the Acard is NOT - this is what I've heard from several reliable sources.

a lot of people who have internal drives on ASR sometimes have a separate power source for the CF drive and they switch that on first before turning the ASR on - bit of an ugly work around in my book though...

I REALLY need space, was gonna sell my ASR, but in the end I made a deal with an ex ensoniq tech to swap my maxed ASR KB with scsi and output expander for a fully serviced ASR10 rack with a internal hotswap CF drive with iodata bridge.

Shame to loose the KB version of ASR, but the freed up space has allowed me to have another Ensoniq purchase, a ESQ1 synth, highly underrated synth. mine is coming with wood end caps and latest OS on RAM cart. Can't wait to get hold of that beauty!! I needed a good poly synth! and with the ASR rack version I can still experiment with waveboy etc once connected to midi keyboard.

external hotswap Spyrus drive is another option for ASR **cough cough** wink wink

I found that i really liked the sequencer on the esq1.Much more so than the asr10 rack that i have.Stange as its much older.Really easy to use and doesent hiccup when starting ect.
