Can Someone please help me with sampling!!!

( this is a long post...) I'm having a few problems with sampling and I also have a few questions that the "professionals" at Guitar Center can't answer for me. First of all with the sampling aspect, when you're looking to sample a string section or any type of instrumentation, does it need to be in a solo in the song? I have ssampled instruments out but there is always a drum kick, snare etc. attached with the sample. Is there anyway to get rid of this? Also how is it possible to get bass lines do you need to find a solo bass section on records or is it possible to filter them out? Final two questions if you're going to be doing sample heavy hip hop type music is it wise to invest in an akai s-950 type sampler? and FINALLY is it possible to run a bass guitar directly into the mpc and sequence it live?

Ideally, you need to find a solo section for whatever you are sampling. Removing a bassline from behind say, a vocal is not really possible as all instruments cover a very broad eq range, even bass sounds have a lot of engery in the mid highs.

So, eqing out the bass (main) frequncies will certainly reduce a bassline's presence (40-200Hz) , but you'll find that the bass is still audible as much of it's character is held in the 300 - 1000Hz region - and this region contains alot of the vocals main mid range (600 - 3000).

There is software that tries to remove vocals using phase differences, but it's not very good.

You can create bass lines by heavy low pass filtering of music - just need to experiment with the MPC filter function.

You can plug a bass into your MPC, but I dont recommend it - better to run it through a bass amp with a compressor/limiter tagged on to control the wayward levels.
