Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Hey all,

I'm sure this question has been answered by the wise and benevolent folks who inhabit this forum, but the search function and myself do not get along, so I'll just ask again!

I have two hi-hat samples: One is an open hi-hat and the other is the hi-hat closed by the foot. These two samples together make up what the sound of someone actually hitting an open hi-hat and closing it would sound like. I would like the sound of the open hi-hat to play when I hit the pad, and the foot closing one to play when I release the pad. How is this accomplished?

personnal i would do it real time. one sound on one pad one sound on another pad. you can **** with you zones. and depending on you pressure on the the pad it will play one sound and when you release it should be a different pressure so the other sound should play. i dunno it sounds like to much extra shit. just do the two pads. peace -bdot

Thanks for the suggestion!

See, for me, it's too much work to use two pads and have to play it, fine tune it in Step edit, etc. I want it set up this way so I can have the hi-hat open for as long as I want with no fuss. Just seems natural to me. I'm looking for a really natural drum sound, and, being a pro drummer, I'm hard to please!

Keep 'em coming guys!

Hey ok, what u can do is play two programs simuntaniusly, just set the two sounds on the same pad in each program but let one of the program trigger the sample on note off..

Not that these aren't good suggestions, but they all seem like workarounds for a feature that may not be there....

I can come up with plenty of ways to work around this, but the way I'm saying would make it really easy. Does this feature exist? Sean W? RenegadeBliss? Any other elite peoples? Where you at?

u can set a track up to play two programs simuntaniusly!, part 1 and part 2
this is a feature is is not,... the mpc is blank you'll laways have to work, if you actually feel this is a workaround then at least its one that only takes a few sec....

or if you want to keep it all in the same program u can eather

resamlpe the two sounds as one

or if you don't need them to share the same mute group, add a bit of "sliance" to the begining of one of the sample in trim, then layer them on the same pad, adjust the start point +/- untill you get it to sound nicely, and just for bells u can mod the startpint just a bit to give it a more natural feel,..

borther you are gonna work it out

Let me give it a shot.

1. In a program, open the Zone page on a drum program.
2. Select the pad (note) you want to use for the hihat.
3. In the large block in the middle of the page, assign the open-hihat sample to zone #1, and the closing hat sample to zone #2.
4. In the lower block, set the Play mode of zone #1 to NO LOOP or ONE SHOT, and set the Play mode of zone #2 to NOTE OFF.

I don't have an mpc yet (one week to go!), so maybe this is just BS.

Yo Glide...

Thanks for your patience. If I would have thought about your suggestion, I would have seen....YOU ARE RIGHT! Two programs is the answer. It works great, no problems, you da sh!t.

Rob, if they actually had that feature out in the open like that, maybe the world would be a better place.

So, request for a new feature: Instead of assignable pad behavior, assaignable ZONE behavior per pad. That would be sweet.

Thanks all!

You mean it doesn't work? Too bad, I really thought it would work. Oh well...

Yeah, the only zone mode options are As Sample, One Shot, Loop, or No Loop. No Note Off. You can set the PAD to play as Note Off, but not the Zone. :(

Weird, I got this straight from the ref manual.

Well, maybe this works. Set the sample's own Play mode to NOTE OFF (if that's an option), and set the Play mode of zone #2 to AS SAMPLE.

The sample's Play mode can be set in the Trim/Loop page in Sample mode. It's in the middle of the screen in the Loop block.

Nah, Note Off isn't an option for the Sample playback mode. If only....
As far as I know, only the pads themselves have the Note Off option. Using two programs, assign Sample 1 to the first program on, say, note 45 and Sample 2 on the same note in the second program, then change the pad on the second program that's assigned to note 45 to Note Off. Then assign both programs to the same track. This is the way. Might not be the only way, but it's the best way I've found (or Glide found  )

Maybe the solution is to simply assign the same mute group number to the 2 sounds in the pitch page!?

So you can kepp the sounds in the same program.

(Note numbers assigned to the same mute group will not sound simultaneuosly.. )

how about using two overlapping keygroups. the same note could be used to trigger both keygroups, one on note-on and one on note off??

He`s right but you have to use Aksys to change it to note off. And on the You got to have the reference manual to find the hidden stuff. :D
