Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

Hi,

I'm experiencing some issues with chopping up samples. My method at the moment is this:

1.Cut the loop so its a 1 bar or sometimes 2 bar measure but still plays in a loop.

2.Then I manually chop the loop on the down beat, notes in the loop if that makes sense.

3.Create a program.

Now here's the problem I'm experiencing, when I create a program and then play the samples there's an issue with certain parts being too static and abrupt, it doesn't breathe if I can express it in another way when I hit the sample on the pad.

I played with decay settings and it doesn't really help so its an issue I feel with my method of chopping.

I have a 2500MPC with the free JJOS.

Thanks in advance for any help.

hmm.. How do you chop? do you use NDC or Autochop???

Try having the first sample NOT end where the next one starts.
This is possible in NDC. I do that all the time.. (well almost..)
Your gonna have to set the pads to mono in programm mode, so they cut each other off.. otherwise you might have a big mess of everything playing together..

I haven't got the JJOS XL which provides NDC, trying to save up for that.

I don't autochop, I basically start by reducing it to 2 slices, where I then divide and divide upon the note, hit of the loop if that makes sense.

Your method of having the sample not ending where the next one starts is something I experimented today by watching Supreme.

Instead of chopping I was extracting the note, its better but its a much slow process since I extract it then I have to move the start marker to the end and then begin again unless there's a shortcut?.

I don't have JJOS XL either.. I have 2 1.17.. It says in my sig as well, so I didn't think I'd have to mention

You don't have non destructive chop?? you shure???

:? the f***?!

Well anyway.. the essence was, to leave ur samples a bit longer, so they fill those empty spaces.
There's loads of ways to do that.. Dig in to ur machine and u will find out...
The Friendly manual might help

Sent a pm can you check.

I understand leaving the samples a bit longer, been playing around with it. I have checked the manual and watched videos but nothing has really answered my query except like I mentioned NDC which would be a godsend.

Hey OP I think you will find that your method is the root of your issue. A loop say of drumming will have not the same grid like timing of your sequence. If you chop like you do you will take away any groove it has and doubly so if then played in sequencer to grid. Hence your problem. Do not cut on hits, cut evenly then make program and sequence it. Then adjust chops start points and it will sound better because it does not cut out the swing in your loop. So a lazy down beat wont get lost.
