Hmm.So, you are telling me typing the word "keyboard" on the MPC using a data wheel (going back and forth 89 clicks on the data wheel and 6 right arrow presses) is faster than pressing two buttons.

Sooty_G wrote:also, just give up on the date thing. there is no internal clock for the mpc to keep track of time when powered down, and i'll be damned if i'll have the mpc trying to keep track of the time since power up in the background while i am recording/playing my tracks. we're pushing the limits of cpu use as it is without trying to have some background process constantly running behind everything on the os. that's the exact reason why computers have crappy midi timing when compared to dedicated hardware units.

A simple generic date that I can edit is good enough if no clock is present. If the MPC did have an internal clock, it's running already and it needs only to update the text every 24 hours--meaning you wont notice anything.

Sooty_G wrote:the 'list of names in a text file' request isn't bad. the names in the text file would pop up in a list you could scroll thru in the naming window when you hit a 'names' button or something. i can't see myself really using it much, but if JJ could implement it easily AND most importantly it didn't interfere with anything else or slow the mpc down in any way, then why not?

not an urgent request for me, tho. i would rather see JJ concentrate on more performance features.

Cool, as long as the list you are scrolling through is in a 4 X 4 array that leads into the other banks and I can press a pad to insert a name accordingly.

I have no problem with people wanting to use the old way of scrolling.

A request like this will increase my naming performance.

Copy/paste (or a new function key) would be used to add new words to the list?

One of the Q-link sliders could be used to quickly slide trough the vertical list, while the q-link button would be used to select and insert the word?

Messing around with the F# keys is going to piss people off and take longer to code. considering it was not needed.

Hey Hey Hey, The title of this thread is not "Big up my BFF", so please add a comment to fine tune or reasons why the request is not needed.

 Ok I wouldn't mind if there was a feature to copy/paste text from predefined list, but don't see it as anything that would improve my MPC experience. JJ's scrollwheel naming and typing using pads is fast and efficient once you get accustomed to it (see: qwerty keyboard, cell phone etc.).

Agreed. I want rock solid music production performance. Not word Microsoft Word. You get used to it, it's very quick and has different input options already. And yeah no internal battery and clock means no date and time stamp. Which of course I think is like op and not good improvement of os at all. I try and put myself in your shoes, and think about it. It's only problem when you have name some stuff!!! So do it some other time, when you are not jamming. I do a save all if I make something and name tracks later then just save all sequences to write names of tracks into project. Easy and done the next day. If you don't know what stuff is then just listen to it then name it. The project will be as you saved it so no problem finding stuff.

we basically use the MPC in different ways. Some use it as a performance tool, others as composing tool.... We have different work flows. If the naming procedure was not such a hindrance for my work flow I would not have bothered with this request.

You could say this is a matter of taste.

I compared the naming procedure of JJOS to that of Yamaha Rm1x, and I can name files faster and easier on the Rm1x, although it uses pretty much the same method, i.e. scrolling and inserting characters but in a more intuitive way (at least for me), so even the current naming mechanism could be improved.

can't you just have some silent samples autoloaded and copy and paste the names using the current copy paste?

i would like a name reset option so the name can be reset to sample1. There is a musical application to this which I discussed in a thread with sooty. I might do a video to demo it sooner or later.

Hmm.So, you are telling me typing the word "keyboard" on the MPC using copy and paste (10 button presses and not to mention numerous screen changes) is faster than pressing two buttons.

Actually I'm already using this method, but still, a dedicated list linked to a text file would be a much better solution.

Can you point to the thread?I would like more information on the musical application
of this.A video is always well appreciated.Peace TYPO

Hi,
I very much like the idea of a list of names to pick from! Good naming of samples, tracks, seq, ... is essential to me. That feature would help a lot to keep everything tidy. I was already thinking about some makrostuff (as NYM uses AFAIR) but that would involve a computer. I want to stay MPC only, whenever possible.

Just my 2 cents

BTW: read my post here: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=152836 ... a list of names could help a lot as long as there is no copy of tracks keeping the names (and parameters).

BTW2: A list of names won't harm the performance as naming is usually done while the MPC isn't playing, right? The list just needs a bit of memory, depending on the size of the list. If you don't need it, just don't fill it.

Regards
Higgie

some other changes/improvements I'd like to see:

1) Paste will not erase the whole name like it does now, but would rather insert the copied word into the current name, so e.g.

you have a sample named: Song-06 and you want to change it to mixdown-06,

- first copy the word mixdown (from the names list)
- delete the word Song from Song-06,
- press paste and you got mixdown-06

.... you could also have an insert/overwrite function which would function the same way copy/paste functions now

2) An Insert program Name/ sequence Name / track name function:

This function would insert the name of the currently active sequence or track, or the name of the program of the currently selected track into the naming window.

3) Automatic incremental naming of patterns. Right now you can have automatic incremental naming of patterns only if you start with Pattern01, if you have some other name it wont work.
