I thought that poly took up more polyphony than mono, that is why everything is set to mono.

I will read. Sheesh! :)

It's really not. But there is nothing similar in software. Once you wrap your head around it, you'll play it like an instrument without even looking at it.

Shhhh.....I'm busy reading my manual :)

thanks I appreciate that.

I still can't get the guitar riff to play over the whole drum beat no matter what settings I use.

I have even tried the sequencer setting under the "Other" button.

Hmmm...

Any recommendation for reading or otherwise.
Other than the manual.
I know they sell a $40 manual on this site.
Anybody used it? Any good?
Most importantly would it help me.

The concept of mute groups and one shot are not completely foriegn to me.
They are just called something else in software sometimes.

Can you all send me links to your most sequencer/sample intensive pieces of music. So I can really see what the MPC 500 is capable of?

if you spent more time trying stuff on the mpc by yourself instead of running to the internet every 5 minutes, you'd probably get it by now... put your time in and just pretend the internet doesn't exist.

Please explain exactly what you are doing, step by step. It will help us understand the problem. For example;

1. New program
2. Load guitar sample
3. Assign sample to pad
4. Select main then track
5. Assign Program to track
6. Hit record
7. Play sample

Do the sample thing with a program filled with drum samples. Record Your beat onto a different track.

It should work. This is basic stuff.

This. I've bought the version for each model I own just for reference.

I may have a faulty unit. But I will keep plugging away until my new unit comes.

Track 1 has the bass drum, hi hat open and closed.
Track 1 ahs indivdual sample for each drum piece as opposed to a drum loop.

Track 2 has the "hit"
Track 3 has the guitar riff sample. this is the longest sample it almost lasted
two measures.

If I mute track 1 and 2 then the guitar riff plays fine.
If I leave out the hi hats and just have the kick and snare then the guitar riff plays for the most part.

is the guitar part in a separate program? or are you just assigning all the sounds to pads within the same program? if so, make a separate program for each track... except for drums... but make sure each drum sound is on it's own track as well and set to poly.

cool... that'll probably solve your issues... drums don't HAVE to be on separate tracks, but it's nice to have each drum sound [kick, snare, hi-hat] on it's own track for muting/unmuting live later... as far as other samples are concerned... yes, definitely make a new program for each sample you want to use in a beat... remember if a program is MONO one pad within that program will cut off the previous... but if it's POLY each sound will overlap on top of eachother.

ok two bar sequence

Program 1
Pads
A1 Bass Drum
A2 Snare
A3 hihat closed
A6 hh closed

Program 2
Pads
A1 Guitar Riff(About a measure long)

Sequencer

Program 1
Tracks
A1 Bass Drum
A2 Snare
A3 hi hats open/closed

Tried all drums on poly AND mono

Program 2
Tracks
B1 Guitar

Tried guitar riff on poly and mono

Guitar will trigger on measure 1 sometimes for a couple of go arounds and then it falters.
I even tried moving the event of the guitar a few ticks to the right of beat one.
Just to off set it from the Bass drum hit on beat one.

I'mma little drunk so sorry if I don't follow. You guitar rift is playing correctly but ends after a couple of bars?
