Do you have a PC? How much are you looking to spend?
Sometimes I still laugh out loud about the beat kangz and that time some English dude hacked the Akai marketing website and stole a bunch of pictures of the Ren before it was released.

Actually Lamp is right. You can load your own samples onto the MPC and launch the sounds with a midi-connected cheap keyboard. You'll have pads and keys. It's perfect and doesn't require a PC.
There are lots of threads on which MPC to buy. I'm of the opinion that a 1000 is a better option than a 500 in terms of ability to grow into the unit. If you do go this route and get a midi-keyboard, make sure it has the round midi ports and not just the usb-midi. If this doesn't make sense, just ask for a follow up.

MPK is just a MIDI contoller... how useful that would be to you would depend on what beat-making software you're using. what are you currently using to make music on your computer?

It's what I was thinking about when I first answered. It's fine but it requires a PC and a program that will allow you to trigger beats and sounds. It's more work to set up quite frankly, but you can grow into it. The pads aren't great, but you can replace them with something better. Getting any controller working with a PC-based program takes time and patience in my opinion. BTW - I started with an XR20 myself. I still use it to sketch out beats because it is so responsive and easy to use. But the preset sounds get tiresome so I see where you are coming from.
