layering, crossfades between kits, pitch, adsr and volume variations, are some basic and simple ways to gain variation.. pay good attention to length of hits and learn how length of hits in a groove can push and pull a listener.. practice with ghost notes and train up your attention to detail so that you can learn how to control subtleties in sound, which is especially useful when dealing with ghost notes or when accentuating hits
