Fool Proof Options for Saving

my internal floppy has flamed out...AGAIN...I'm fed up with this, and don't think going to Zip would be anybetter b/c those disks crap out after awhile too, plus they hold more, and would hose more stuff when they do go south...


what are my options...I've searched past responses, and everybody seems resigned to Zip...in the 4-5 years I've had my MP I've learned to take losing a hot-a$$ beat to a crash, or the occaisional bad disc, but now this sh*tty drive ain't reading sh*t, not old discs, not brand new discs...so I can save nor load anything...

...in fairness to the sh*tty drive it works sometimes, but many other times it don't...

1. can I replace it with a plain old floppy, or do I need a special kind?

2. my Ideal solution is some kind of hard drive to work from...that I can pluq to my PC then Burn to CD or DVD for storage

...what are my Zip options, I've been sh*tted once already on Ebay so I'm wary of those f*cks...figure I'd catch a charge of going to dudes crib w/the burner (and I ain't talkin maxtor)?

does your mpc have a scsi connection? if so cf cards/readers could be an option...

I think I read that he has external hard drives for the mpc 2000xl.

SCSI Hard Drive.
SCSI CDROM.
Internal IDE 100/250 ZIP.

Go and buy a PC floppy drive at ANY pc store and it will work just fine
and it's cheap.

get a zip disk. the harddrives are less then 30 bucks too. u only need like 4 gbs.

I got a HD like a month ago. I couldn't believe how fast samples saved and loaded compared to floppy. I recommend a HD. I'm sure it's better than zip too but I couldn't tell you. It's def worth the investment.

The drives themselves are pretty cheap. The largest cost is the case. It is not uncommon to spend more on a case than the drive. I find old CD reader cases at thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets for under $5. I toss the old crappy 2x reader out of it and throw in a $10 4Gig SCSI drive.

Another fancy method I like to do is to take a $15 1 RU shelf and mount the SCSI connector and power supply gutted from an external case along with the drive. Mount a 1 RU blank cover over the front with a power switch that i cut into it. Now's it's a rack-mount HD like the big dollar units found in catalogs. Usually there is enough room to mount a reader in there too.

I really suggest using two methods for storage. One will always be a backup. When I transfer to the MPC I save to both the HD and a separate MPC formatted removable drive (CF, Zip, Syquest, etc). When the MPC formatted removable disk is full, I use the MPC Editor to pull a backup image file off the disk. I can then either archive these image files onto CD/DVD or burn the image files to CD for direct reading by the MPC (the MPC editor names them .mpc files, but they are the same as ISO files). The primary working space is the hard drive due to it's convience and speed and any additional saving I do also gets saved to the removable drive for backup using the above method. With any single point of failue, I will always have a backup.

I've had no way to back up at all til recently...got me a DVD writer now, so I can just burn discs and put them shits up...

...the HD I want for working...have it hooke to the CPU as well as the MPC, but maybe that's beyond the scope of what it can do

I don't know why people keep sh*tting on Zips. Yeah I had a Zip100 (in my computer) that got the click of death and died about 4 years ago. Swapped it out with a Zip250 for the P.C. and one for the MPC. They are still going strong now. But definitely backup your sh*t!
