Who needs controllers?

Yeah, that would be mostly pointless IMO and at this stage can't see them even vaguely considering that - unless they could tweak the interface for touchscreen optimisation of course. That would be pretty cool, but I guess that's where the Fly comes in, which, I believe, is going to be available standalone (although I doubt they had any choice in that matter given that it has to be be distributed via iTunes).

This debate has been going on for over a decade. In my studio, I have software that requires a dongle (Motu Mach Five 3)...software that requires just a product key (Apple Logic Studio).....software the requires a product key and internet authorization from a server (NI Maschine/Battery3, Propellerhead Reason 4). I am sure a few years from now, we can still have this discussion.

Yep, I completely agree that the software shouldn't be sold standalone, the main point of the product is that it's a perfect marriage of hardware and software. However, the software should be able to be used standalone if desired, there should definitely be no requirement to hook up a Ren/Studio/Dongle in order for it to work standalone without any limitations.

And really, there's no point limiting this as it will get cracked and that leaves legitimate, paid up users wondering why they are the only ones not able to take advantage of the standalone software features. But this is nothing new -

exactly. that's why i said it should come with the controller AND a dongle. use the dongle when the controller is not plugged in. like when you are on the go. i understand software gets pirated all the time.

ps as mentioned by someone else, it might be useful for some cats to to do some final editing using the software alone? say when travelling.....using the ren and notebook on a plane might be cumbersome

of course to get the true benefits the controller is needed.....no one ever said otherwise....however using software alone, i imagine its just some extra effort involved...eg 5 mouse clicks instead of rotating a dial directly....who knows...all will be revealed once its on the market

of course cracked software exsists however ur idea that akai should sell the ren software seprately so u can use if with other controllers is where ur foolishness kicks in.

cos the magic with these systems is the integration of the software and hardware, if u buy another controller to use the with mpcs software or to use with maschine software u loose the benefits cos u then have to use the mouse to do all ur menu work.

Computer connectivity and using a mouse is the #1 complaint of MPC Forum members that say that will pass on these new MPCs.

You'll find that not knowing right now what these new MPCs are actually like to work with and sound like is the #1 complaint of MPC Forum members that say that they will pass on these new MPCs

COMPLETELY sums that whole scenario up! Been there plenty of times!

The other side of the coin is that you will find users working with maschine that like the sound and the setup looking forward to the new mpcs and a couple ex mpc users coming back. It is all good once the gear drops, it won't be for everyone, but many will use it.

Honestly though, the last thing I want is another dongle! It's bad enough I have to use one for Pro Tools and all my plugins! If Akai went the dongle route, I'd prefer they use iLok instead of their own since many people already have them!

Yep, this is another problem with dongles, everyone wants to push their own system - sorry, but my Macbook only has 2 USB ports. Maybe that's why Apple doesn't use dongles for their software!

Forget dongles. Just let legitimate customers pay the money and do what the hell they want, no restrictions. Don't force your legitimate customers to download the cracked, malware riddled dongle free copy

I agree. my macbook air only has 2 usb ports also. i am not saying an "AKAI" dongle. it could be one that uses iLok. a lot of software uses ilok. my reason uses ignition key and pro tools uses iLok.

Alas, this probably wouldn't happen anyway. it doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I already know how and to what capacity i want to use the ren. the thing is not even out yet and I can't wait for the rewire support update.

ok maybe not a wack idea but its a shit idea, when ur mixing in the box u may wanna run the software without the hardware or jsut doing lil finishing touches, so dont wanna have to **** with a dongle
