It might be a long shot, but according to my wife there are non-acetone nail polish removers. Instead of acetone, the active ingredient is ethyl acetate, which is a little gentler than acetone. It's main use is for fake nails as the ethyl acetate won't dissolve the plastic, for what it's worth. Otherwise, an exterior restoration by Forat or someone similar might be in order. I don't know man, it sucks to see something like that defaced

forat is kinda out of the question, as i'm not in the USA and can only imagine how much international shipping would be both ways to south america... and forat's prices are already high as is... so definitely not a possibility...
the seller says it was recently serviced and is fine as far as functionality and sound... he says he can even replace the internal sounds on the EPROM for me if i don't want the factory sounds [an interesting and tempting offer], but i can't get him to go lower than $600 which just seems like way too much for something in that cosmetic condition... again, this is probably the only one of these i'll ever see here... so that's the only reason why i'm even considering it rather than just spending the $750 on a perfect one on ebay [if i was in the USA, that is...]

this could be worth looking into... thanks for that... it's amazing how little info there is regarding "cleaning an SP's faceplate" on the internet...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/E-MU-SYSTEMS-SP ... 33754b4533
or here's one on youtube that has similar issues on the faceplate...
can't see the ebay pics (firefox warning about a bad site)
the SP in the video probably had a meeting with aggressive catpiss
IMO it doesn't look like the surface itself is bad but something like this happen

IDK how the SP faceplate is build but it's probably layers of plastic and paper. In case of my Laptop it is a thin transparent plastic layer on top of the actual case and the marks are spots where the glue has lost its adhesive strength caused by heat and/or high humidity (i guess).
I can imagine the SP in that video have the same problem. humidity got between the layers of the faceplate or something like that.
If you take care and don't drown it with isopropyl/water and dry it afterwards you won't get a problem.
peace

i wouldn't care as much if he wasn't asking for 6 bills... if it was half as much, i wouldn't even care if it had blood on it.

if you are buying it for how it looks, then wait for a minty one
if you are buying it for how it sounds, then cop stat!

yeah... good point, buddy maxwell... i know this thread must make me sound a bit picky, but i just feel like the cosmetic condition essentially reflects how the gear was treated over the years. did i mention it's also an 8 hour drive just to go check it out & pick it up?
this also contributes to my reluctancy... but in the meantime, i'm keeping in touch with the seller and still considering buying it in the near future...

see if he will go 750 cause of the nail polish, and explain to him that you have to make an 8 hour drive to look at it, you can always get it customized in the future too.

why would he offer him a buck fifty more?
I say...haggle dude, theres no harm in tryin. I would start at 450, and explain, that gettin that nail polish off and not destroying the finish could be a problem...then go from there. I say you can get him to go down a hundred bucks
