id assume a lot of ppl stick with what works...

after seeing it in use, i want one now

Want what a Maschine or 5k?
If it's the 5k they are pretty cheap used right now and will be even cheaper once the Ren drops so you can easily make it happen.

Just keep your eyes open for deals.

yea, the 5K but im broke. i got 2 2kxl's. maybe i can hustle someone.....

shesawe wrote:How many actual professional producers who use an MPC chop loops, slice, and sequence all in the MPC without software, if any?

probably the vast majority that are still using mpcs. Most mpc owners I come across are using the one they started with and are not changing their workflow much but rather just adding gear on top of what they are already doing to make some things easier or faster. That said I think most of the ones are mpcs are doing the music creation process on the mpc most likely and then tracking to pro tools or whatever other software they use to mix. The beauty of having software is that its just another option to have.

Hip hip isn't defined by your hardware lady's private parts, its the spirit.

^^^^LOL

IDK, an SP-1200 is pretty **** hip-hop, if you ask me! hahaha.

I agree with both of you, its the spirit AND the machine...

I copped an MPC because thats what all the major hip hop producers were using, and my spirit made me stick with it until I knew what I was doing. When I started, I didnt know about the forums and I didnt know anyone with an MPC to teach me.

Nowadays, with computer software, youtube and accessabiliy, it is WAY more about the spirit. You can download free/cheap recording software, watch youtube vids to train yourself and pump out hot garbage all day long.

In the end, do you and go make beats!

i dont think the gear determines if a beat will be hot or not... it has more influence on how you work due to the limitations so sometimes it might help a person take a few steps back and keep things simple.. not every beat will benefit from automating 40 or 50 fx tracks... know what I mean? but sometimes automating 40 or 50 tracks will give it that extra bit of edge. It takes soul to sometimes make you go as far as automating 40 or 50 fx tracks to get the beat to sit right though...

**** it, the beat will be wack unless it was produced on a drum machine made before 1997.

.........your spirits in your computer isnt it?

Seriously, the amount of time it takes to load a DAW, chop, export, then import into sampler you may as well have just recorded straight into your mpc.

Anyone who thinks they can chop in a PC then export to mpc quicker than i could chop a sample inside the mpc is straight crazy. Even using FL studio i couldnt chop any quicker than i could now. clowns

Whatever is at my disposal I use.

It isn't a competition you know, its not about who chops faster its about the end result which is the music. I don't care what you use, if its a straight up banger then I don't care if you made it on a toy piano.

What you're missing here is that 9/10 people don't care what equipment you use. If you make a crap beat do you feel by stating it was made on a MPC you win more points?.

If anything you're more interested in image and posturing which I'm not interested at all. I live my MPC but there's no way I'm not going to pass up using other equipment if it can streamline my process.

MPC allows me to better focus on the music. It's easier and more fun than a computer sequencer.
Quality, not quantity :D

Actually you insinuated that the MPC was better in your original comments, you didn't outright say it but you laid that argument.

Plus chopping vs PC isn't even an discussion, you're delusional if you believe that but if it makes you feel better. You're just a relic.

I, not knowing much, would actually be surprised if anyone was using JUST an MPC. Premo actually sampled into s950s, mpc60 to sequence, and had planet phatt or mo' phatt modules. Damu lays down some live instrumentation, etc. Dilla had ESXs, SP303s, etc etc. Much less once you laid down any tracks, I feel at least most would add some external FX, etc.

Point being, from what I know, which like I said, isn't much, but the C in MPC is the key. MPCs are fantastic centers of production, and are all accomplished samplers that will cover at leat 90% of your sampling/sequencing needs, no matter the model. But none of them are all in one solutions to much of anything beyond skeleton beats.

I have that book, Behind The Beat, that showed a bunch of producers set ups. As far as I remember, Jehest had the simplest set up (2 s950s, an Atari ST and a midi keyboard) but even he used external processing.

Don't get me wrong, I think if I was allowed ONE piece of equipment, it'd be an MPC (I just had 3 months in a hospital, it's the only thing I brought with me), but they aren't everything. Not even close.
