Powerful but small studio ideas

Well, where I'm at is I listed everything besides the Virus, 5k and s950. I guess it's all based on what sells. I listed by what I want to get rid of, the mpc and all that is honestly a tiny bit more than they're worth, but if I could get rid of everything and reinvest in a smaller but more powerful setup, I'd be pretty happy.

To anyone with the Fantom/XS/any other sound module...I know they're romplers, but how are the electronic-y sounds in whatever you use? I'm mostly looking for instruments (hence the va for synthy sounds), but I was checking synthmania today and listening to the srx boards and the sound fx and another one (it escapes me right now) sounded amazing. A Fantom and some SRX boards seems like a solid bet for my sound module.

And the mpc60/s950 while I watch the phoenix/nashville game was a brilliant idea. Gracias.

It;s a bit long in the tooth, but the sound quality of the korg TR rack is top notch, great for dark ambient pieces. The drums sounds are still quality, and the basses.

Dark, ambient sounds are right up my alley...

Man. I feel like this is just going to turn into me getting MORE stuff. haha.

maybe this will help you hold back, manji... for what it's worth the TR Rack's interface is AWFUL... it takes so long to navigate through it... and no jog wheel for scrolling through sounds or anything... just tiny buttons... great quality sounds, but one of the worst modules as far as user-friendliness is concerned...

Yeah, that's the exact opposite direction I want to move and definitely coincides with what I'm reading.

No doubt the interfaceis a royal pita, however what wins is the sound quality, besides you could spend a few days making some patches. There is a PC editor you can use, check out korg forums

Ye, I'm familiar with that feeling. I don't have that much gear if compared to some "amateur" studios I've seen posted on the gearsluts forum , but one of my friends who has only a notebook, guitar, axiom midi keyboard, a mic and KRK active monitors thinks I have an amazing studio and everytime he comes over h esays something like "this shit gotta be used to it's fullest potential".

A few years ago I got sick of my computer(s) malfunctioning, crashing, etc.. so I started moving away from the pc realm into hardware.

If I don't use some equipment for some periods of time I just cover them with a blanket or some material, so there is less visual distraction.

Lately I've been playing around with just the mpc1000, electric guitar with effects and a Yamaha rm1x groovebox, the other two synths that I have (Roland SH32 and Korg MS2000) are covered with a blanket.

Oh ye I almost forgot about the two patch bays in my rack. The patch cables really add to the visual confusion and to the feeling that you might have a bit too much equip.

Some people are in this music game holding on to rare items and not using them. That is not cool. Give others a chance at it. Sell or rent unused items, because then everyone will get a chance and it will come back around if you need it again. Plus you are running up the cost of the gear.
I don't take for granted my access and ownership of items. What's the point of having unused gear?
If you are a professional and are making money out of your studio or your music then I understand - because frankly it is affordable. However if you are a hobbiest, a hoarder, a dreamer and not a collector well, I say free up the gear.
I have seen so much poverty in my travels that it sickens me when I see first world waste.

The computer crashing and malfunctioning is what got me so into hardware too. It's been a long time since I've used a computer in anyway, and I work on them now for a living, so I'm kinda thinking I might be able to handle it? But I'm still so skeptical.

Does anybody here have any experience with both a roland mc909 and a fantom x? I was messing around on a MC909 last night and was pretty happy with the sounds and am hoping they're the same in the Fantom. If they are I think we might have a winner!

If somebody owns something its their right to do what they please with it.

Still completely unsure, and I've only been trying to sell stuff for under a week, but I think I'm keeping the DPS24 and just going to record on that. There's a huge cost difference between a laptop and small interface with some adat i/o to help justify keeping the dps. and a full blown computer that can record. If I get what I want for everything, maybe I'll let go of the DPS, but it'd be the last thing.


And I agree with Astronaut. First off, I'm selling unused stuff, so labeling me (I'm not sure if you're saying me or just in general, Canefire) a hoarder is a bit silly. And secondly, nothing I have is extremely hard to come by. The prize pieces in my system are the MPC 60 and S950, which anybody can find any time they want. The harder pieces to find are the cheap niche stuff like the s770, and even that isn't impossible. Not like I'm hoarding 8 Novation K Racks up here (which I looked for for so long, I don't know why they're so hard to find).

Anyway, the saga continues. Getting rid of the 35 channel console is I think the biggest thing. Damn thing takes up like half my bedroom.

I tried to sell my gear but they're like tools in the shed. Sometimes you can't do the job with an MPC, so I'll bust out the MV, and if the MV is too much of a jackhammer then I'll bust out the little hammer, MS-1. Every tool has a use.
