Hi All,

I was wondering your take on the longevity between the mpc ren vs maschine. Which one do you see still being developed three years from now. Why? I'm saving for either the next version of Maschine or the Ren. Thanks

definitely NI maschine! akai has proved that they release faulty products and don´t care about their customers.

just search these forums for terms like "mpc 1000 pad fix upgrade" and "tact switch issues"

MPC 1000/2500 forums and MPC 5000 forums alone should send a wake up call to anybody to wait at least a year to see if it is the same fkd game plan.If it is not the
O.S. then the poor design of the hardware. The more things change the more they
stay the same. Will wait for REN,STUDIO,and FLY reviews with anticipation.

both companies are just as risky imo... while NI has been quick to update Maschine since it's release, they were also quick to pull the plug on their Kore interface/controller in order to focus on Maschine... so who knows when they'll release something new and decide to drop maschine for good... meanwhile AKAI has sucked BIG TIME in regards to customer service, releasing buggy operating systems and never even addressing the huge pad fiasco with the MPC1000, etc... so i'd say this is a risk you're ALWAYS running with ANY software out there...

It will matter as the os for mac and pc will be different at the time 5 to 10 years from now.

Wow just read this about the mpc 1000 pads http://createdigitalmusic.com/2007/11/p ... -solution/

Did AKAI ever fix them? Do you think NI hardware is higher quality build than akai? Just curious.... Thanks for the info.

still wont matter if you have a dedicated music computer that you dont update cause of stable versions ect.

im not updating my mac to snow leopard or any other update they come out with, cause it works solid right now as is.

on of my old teachers was running his old protools 5.3 on a ancient mac, cause it was stable.

thats the thing, if it fits your workflow, why upgrade?

at your original question, i dont know really, i guess we just have to wait and see. it looks like the mpc ren will be really popular, and i dont see maschine slowing down with their line anytime soon either. only time will tell.

dats wassup there is no law to say u have to upgrade each time these corporations release a new o/s or new computer.

if the shit i have works and does what i need why the hell am i upgrading? i know cats that buy a new tv cos the company released a new model but thats a bit sheepish if u ask me.

Kore was around for a long time (2006-2011) people seem to ignore that fact.
Many Kore users just wanted to make noise because they wanted more features and development.

The true hope is that if Akai does follow it's norm, the products will at least be at a point that is stable enough to continue to work.

That's all you can really hope for.

Build quality and future iterations of the controllers not withstanding, I feel that NI is the far more innovative company. There are a lot of omissions by NI in the Maschine but as far as software development, it's hard, for me at least, to imagine Akai out performing them without a massive amount of third-party help or a headstrong company restructuring initiative (that is, hiring in-house programmers en masse). Maybe I'm wrong though and Akai will be able to pick up an array of talented refugees from other companies but if not, we'll just see variations on the same old MPC concept with new industrial designs and form factors but nothing actually riveting. If they can manage to compete after the initial awe of having a "MPC in the computer" wears off then we should all be happy at having many breakthrough options. Not to be a doomsayer, as I'm actually looking forward to seeing what the new MPC units will live up to be, but right now I don't see them being able to compete in the long run as long as NI, Ableton, Fxpansion, Propellerhead and even Image-Line and the behemoth DAW developers still have the floor. What will hold Akai up is the concept of a dedicated controller and their brand, hopefully they can add forward thinking and maintaining a superior design and impetus with both into the pot, as in my opinion, this is the key to them surviving in this alien software realm they've entered.

Though that doesn't directly answer which company I think will still be developing their product, I do think it all correlates into longevity of the products themselves. All things being equal and not factoring in possible discontinuations for sake of other flagship products, I think NI currently has the biggest reservoir of talent and development to pull from if the past, current and near future products are any indication.

As it stands, Akai are poised to compete with quite a few well established software companies and even a few smaller upstarts with bright ideas, instead of their old guard of being able to rest upon their laurels as a nearly peerless 16 pad hardware sampler monopoly. They are entering the fray, regardless of them being the former kings of a dying world of likewise products.

You've summed up the MPC Ren for a lot of people with this statement. I was hoping the software would bring something new to the table... maybe even something unique or groundbreaking, but we'll have to wait to see what future updates bring.
