yeah exactly - that was the point of my post.. im not dissatisfied with the sound of the MPC at all, i just wanted to find out of what ive head about the 60 and 3000 etc was true from people that have actually owned the other ones. and now I'm educated that there really isnt any difference, thankyou forum.

and if i picked up any tricks from other users about any gear they run their sound through along the way that would be a bonus.. which i did

There is a difference in sound between the 60,3k and 1k, but the average ear rarely picks it up, and as Jpeg said, the 1k still puts out a punchy signal making it easily adjustable once it hits the mixer.

i had also every mpc and now the 3k, 2kxl and the 25k.

to be honest, i always thought the 25k is way too sterile sounding but i learned a new and really simple thing not so long ago:

ESP. ON VINYLDRUMS:
SAMPLE AS HOT AS YOU CAN ON YOUR 1K (even w/ a light clipping)

means: use your Sample-inputs and don`t load the sounds only from your HD transfered from your computer.

i`ve learned a lot from this thread (though using MPCs over 7 years now):
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/rap-hip- ... -rjd2.html

RJD2 had also a mpc workshop on redbull academy (can`t find the link at the moment) but this is also worth checking it out.

for me the greatest producer, shares so many tips and tricks...

wow there goes my day - that RJD2 thread is killer.

thanks for the tip re sampling hot - ive generally been a loader, comes with the territory of transferring from a software to hardware production process..

but yeah resampling both the dry and a bit of wet band pass filtered/overdriven signal has definitely given me the sound ive been looking for. punches right through and sounds all vintage-ey. definitely takes away any sterility.

im actually just thinkin now i just wanna get a second MPC - not for sound quality improvement or anything like that - but im trying to build up a purely hardware live setup.. and whats got me stumped is a good way to transition between tracks sequences etc in a fluent manner within a mix and i can imagin mixing between 2 mpc's would be awesome.. and given that i love my mpc so much - is it wrong to want another...its a bit like girlfriends really.

maybe if i see a cheap 2K XL, i like fixing broken gear so should be able to find a cheapie.

I actually agree with two opposite ends of the spectrum that have been said.

First off, get what's possible out of what you've got. I go through that constantly. Spend more time reading about how what I don't have is amazing than I do making what I have amazing.

And secondly, the old reel to reel is a great idea. A different spin on it is once I get finished tracks (but it may be different for you, finished loops from the 1k, for instance), is run them fairly hot through my Korg EMX with the tubes turned up. Then I sometimes layer the "clean" and the EMX tracks on top of each other. Sometimes it gets muddled, sometimes it doesn't. I do the same with my s950, but that's sampling and playing loops back instead of running it through, but the ideas the same. Having owned the 1k, spending a lot of time on the master eqs/compressors once you've got something worth while adds a lot over all. Not as precise as outboard gear, but it fattens things up a bunch. So does layering, obviously, but not just stacking different sounds, stacking different sequences, playing with filter/tuning, etc etc. You can get really punchy and in your face drums as well as almost minimalist smooth drums and anything in between.

I do all that shit inside Cubase/Logic, What I do to EVERY beat is, ill drop a EQ on and take out all the lows I cant hear, so for example if you drop a particularly airy high hat with all that vinyl crackle and shit if you cut that out it'll free up precious frequencies... I do this on every sound just make sure you dont take out anything you want (duh)
Then I'll boost and cut areas which make the final mix sound awful (pretty much eq 101) and compress.. But then again personally i quite like it sounding less polished, that was my whole reason for wanting a MPC.
