Sampling Time/RAM Issue

Hey guys new to the forum here but I have what I believe is a worthwhile problem. I recently have been having problems with the sampler, I try to record something and it will only record about 1 second of a sample regardless of how long I change the time. This problem is weird to me because I have been able to record samples of any time before but it only recently has been crapping out on me.

I searched around a bit and it seems that other people have solved this by taking out the ram and cleaning it. However, I have done this and nothing has happened, I can only get about 1 second of sampling time.

Now here is where I think the problem might be: I clicked 'open window' in the sampling screen and it says that I only have 18 MB of RAM installed however the guy I bought the MPC from says that it should be maxed out to the 32 MB. Either he is lying to me (I trust the guy so I don't think its that but it also wouldn't surprise me) or the MPC is wrong/something is wrong with the RAM itself.

What do you guys think I should do because I'm really stumped and not being able to sample from my TT is a real pain.

EDIT: This is strange, I seem to have found a way to work around it by entering in the sample time thru the scrollwheel rather than the keypad. Now my question is: is there any reason why this would happen/should I replace the RAM?

I am 98% sure it is the ram... it sounds faulty to me. This does happen.

did you try the machine with NO ram installed?

the thing is, the max the 2000(xl) can use is 32 megs... right? but here is the thing. There is 2 megs built right into the motherboard... and there are two additional ram slots to put two sticks of 16 megs in there...

so what happens is, when you have nothing, it uses the 2 megs that is built in (the stock ram) .. when you have one 16 meg chip inserted... it uses that plus the 2 stock megs (that is how you get the 18 megs) ... and when you have two 16 meg chips installed... it ignores the 2 built in megs and uses just the two chips giving you 32 megs from the chips you have inserted.

So, by your description... it sounds like one is not working (which is why it only can see 18 megs... but maybe that extra chip is messing up too...

I suggest you grab another set of ram sticks... it should cost you max 10-15 bucks if that..

Ah I bet you're right I didn't think about that. I have fixed the problem but I will figure out which RAM stick is busted and replace it. Thanks for the help!

if your rams **** buy more, its cheap as these days man.

i bought 2 gig a while back, cost me under $100 aus. you only need 32 meg, you can use two 16 meg sticks. they shouldnt be much, check the 2000 thread to see what brands and what size ram works to double check.

no problem... good luck and make sure you double check and install the correct ram type.

here is another thing you can try..

if you have the 2000xl:

From the main screen hit SHIFT + 5 (TRIM) ... then SHIFT + F1

you can do a ram check to test it out


if you have the 2000 (non xl)

press shift+7 for the mixer screen .... then press open window, then press shift+0

Yup one of my RAM cards isn't working. Figured out which one it was and I am ordering a new one.

But I also figured out that I am an idiot and there was no issue with the sampler in the first place. I was forgetting to hit 'ENTER' after I punched in a time so it would only record one second because thats all I told it to record basically. Glad I figured out that one of my RAM cards is busted in the process though!

Never forget the ENTER button. Its important for all inputs you make (name etc)
