Midi Set Up

I have been trying for he longest to get my newly purchased MPC 2KXL to work properly with my Roland XP-60. I can not get the midi to communicate correctly. With the MIDI out connected to MIDI in and MIDI in connected to MIDI out from each unit, I am yet having difficulty. Sequencing the internal sounds to mpc...no problem. But when I try to sequence sounds from the XP into the MPC...problem.

1. While the MPC drum sequence plays it triggers the notes on the XP.
2. When trying to record/sequence a MIDI track from the XP, MIDI info clashes and makes loud noises.

Something is not jibing with the MIDI set up. I've gone through the book with a fine tooth comb and can't find the problem. I hooked the MPC to an Ensoniq keyboard...same problem. What am I missing here? What am I not setting up correctly internal to the MPC?

I have a XP10.... I'm not sure if its similar, but have you turned the local mode off on the keyboard?

I have tired the local switch as an option to correcting the problem, however when I turn teh local switch off, the keyboard does nto play at all.

In addition to turning the Local Mode off... did you also turn it from drum to Midi and select the proper channel in the Track Type field?

Thanks for your time and assistance. I have tried everything that I know to correct the problem. I am now going to dig deep into the XP-60 book to see if i am missing something there.

What I am finding out is that even when I get it to record I have to have the MPC "Soft Thru" set on OFF or Omni B, to keep it from making that strange MIDI information clash sound.

Also, when I do get one track to record, as soon as I try to record another, it will not play separate sounds. It plays both tracks in the same sound. This is after switching the MIDI channel on both the MPC and the XP-60 to the same channels respectively.

Should'nt the MPC change the MIDI channel automatically in the XP-60 when I change its (MPC) MIDI channel? Maybe not.

nope, you have to set the xp into multitibral mode then map the different midi channels to your xp patches. as you change the mpc track's midi channel, it will switch the sounds.

Thanks. I assume when you say multi-timbrel, you're referring to eprformance mode.

I know it sounds as though I know nothing about the unit, but I've mastered getting it to talk to my roland gear (VS studio), but with the MPC, I am out of my lane.

I did not buy the MPC new, therefore I did go in and initialize the unit to set it to factory settings hoping that would solve the problem. Hopefully it isn't defective, which i do not think that it is. Everything else works fine.
