NO IT DOESNT IT JUST SAYS "7200rpm-->5400rpm HD make any noticeable difference in speed" CARE TO GO IN TO MORE DETAIL ON YOUR FINDINGS ??

Yeah whats up Finny? Off course a HD at 5400 rpm's is slower than one at 7200. :shock:

Yes its slower, sorry... i thought people would understand that i mean; will i notice some difference operating MPC with 5400rpm HD against to 7200rpm HD. If you can is the performance difference how big... Someone maybe tested both HD's.............

It would read and write slower. Thats all. No effect on performance as the MPC runs from the memory..
So saving and loading your stuff takes more time on a 5400 HD. A 10000 RPM would be hot! Hope that it dont gets too hot tho :P

If playing back mutliple tracks from the HD ever happens you will notice the difference. At 5400 RPM, the HD will spin to slow to access all the info. 7200 RPM is the minimum speed for speed for Multi tracking. 10,000 RPM is best.

Personally, I don't think 5400 rpm will be "too slow" at all for multiple tracking on the 4k. Remember, this is no PC. Other than the MPC OS for sequences and samples, there's nothing else to keep running - no Windows :). There's simply much less resources needed to get the job done. The hardware and software is optimized for this kind of usage and nothing else. You don't have that in a PC, so you just can't compare the two.

Also, as someone pointed out, samples themselves are being played from the memory. The hard drive sits idle at this point as the OS is now, I'm pretty sure it would be able to handle a few streaming audio tracks simultaneously as well. I mean, I can accomplish this on a laptop with a 4200 rpm drive, so..

Plus, higher RPM means a louder drive. So I'll stick to 5400 rpm as long as I can.

i agree, even 4200 rpm is useable to be honest, i run about 8 mono tracks on a pentium ii laptop (dell cpi-d, 366mhz, 160mb ram xp sp1)

hard-disk recording isn't necessarily a very demanding application anymore, at the lower end of the spectrum anyway, of course there's a huge difference between 8 mono tracks of 44.1khz 16-bit and say 36 stereo tracks of 24-bit 96khz or whatever but like i say i get 8 tracks on the above spec ... it's the fx and softsynths that kill it of course, but that's procesor intensive and a p ii is too elderly for that now!

For the MPC is shouldn't make a huge difference. I make it a habit of not buying any drive under 7200RPM....why would you want to do that? Keep your options open. What if you want to put that drive in a computer later on? You'd be pissed if you had a 5400RPM drive then.

Well, I use 10 000 RPM s-ata disks in the PC which I use for musical purposes. Add to that the fact that I use them in raid0.. which means, they share the workload to up the speed even more. The speed is awesome, but just I can't stand the noise.

I think i will get a new 7200rpm drive and not put thiis old 5400rpm i have.

I dont get how this 1 Maxtor i have doesent work on the MPC....

And ive seen all the people here dissing the maxtor drives but i have put together maybe 40 computers to studios etc, most of them (maybe 90%) with Maxtor drives and only 1 has crashed, so i think that has lot of do with luck...

About the S-ATA thing... Im just now starting to put together a new main machine to our studio, and i was thinking to put 1 IDE drive for system and software, 2 S-ATA drives, 1 for plugins and 1 for audio...

And i was thinking of NOT to put them on raid because if you lose 1 drive, you lose all data, right?

I read and test article maybe 3 months ago or so, that using S-ATA in raid isnt even that much faster than using them as regular single S-ATA drives...

Some brands works better with brand A than with brand B etc.. There is no logic in that.
