Monitors for Mixing

I have the M1Active Alesis 320 USB monitors for my home studio. I have been lurking here for a hile and came to the conclusion that most of you are knowledgble enough to give me device on whether these are good monitors for mixing. Just as a point of reference, i have the mpc 1000 and use ableton live. Thanks

lot depends on the room, the treatment and your lug holes my friend.

there's a school of thought behind referencing mixes on your laptop and phone speakers seeings as that's how a lot of people consume music these days. mixing to mp3 etc.

i think that whatever you have, you can make it work for you. listen to your room, listen to your favourite music, hear where those mixes bang, learn them, emulate them.

Something that helps me quite a bit is having good headphones to cross reference. Sometimes I hear something in one and not the other. Even if you don't have the "best" monitors at least you can double check them with another reliable source.

In my experience, you will learn your monitors strengths and weaknesses over time. You can spend the bread on Dynaudio and you are still going to listen to the mix on other speakers as well to make sure. People make great music with simple Behringer active monitors when they know them. Sometimes a sub woofer helps and other times a simple 8inch is enough if you know what to listen for.
Like it was said above play your favorite music in the monitors and listen keenly, then mix according to your memory.

Yeah, there is a noticeable difference between the monitors and the headphones so this is great advice. Thanks guys. I will definitely be bumping music in my room and headphones to see what sounds nice.

also mixing at low volumes to see if a certain element is overpowering the whole sonic profile

shit dude, i wasn't implying man uses that to mix lol I just find it a really interesting. analysers can be handy... but as you say there's nothing better than going el natural and just listening. use the force etc

There is a lot to consider and over time you will learn. The headphones advice is very good idea.. You can easily spend thousands of dollars on speakers, so dont start getting gear lust, and tell your self you need these things.....

i have had an argument with friends that love music and there sound systems. They told me i need corrective EQ, I said no I need to treat the room and not use corrective EQ as it will not give me a true representation of the sound. Luckily I scored some decent monitors for very cheap, so was lucky, but headphones help as well as room treatment ect

Whatever you use, make it easy to switch to a commercial CD you like to compare the overall sound. Testing your music playing through an ipod on those crappy white headphones is worthwhile too as that is the most common way people listen to music.
