the idea is similar to the audio sample chopping

e.g. You record a 8 note melody, one note after another, no chords, does not matter how many bars.

The new function would take the note info from the 8 eight notes and assign the according note to the first 8 pads, or to whatever range you specify.

So you could record a C major scale (8notes), engage the function and the mpc would change the note values of the specified pad range (e.g. A01-A08) , you would get a c major scale "chopped" to pads A01-A08.

maybe there is a way to quickly set the note values of pads in 3.18, but I could not find one. There's also no way to transpose the note value of a pad.

another way I see this could be implemented would be with the midi learn method. You'd enable the function, hit the pad you want change the note value of, hit a key on an external midi keyboard, done.

in MAIN, make sure the MIDI field is set to a channel (1A, 2A, etc...) then move the cursor one place to the left to the pads midi note and turn the data wheel. couldn't be faster or easier.


one thing i did want to request of JJ, however, was a bunch of built-in pre-mapped tunings that you could select from.

example: if you hit the WINDOW key when the cursor is over the pad midi note as described above, you get the 'pad to midi note out' screen. at the bottom of this screen is the RESET tab that allows you to reset all the midi notes to the default value.

...but what if, when you hit RESET, it instead offered you a bunch of note scales and keys to choose from.

so you would choose a key (C, C#, D, etc...)

then you would choose a scale (major, minor, dorian, lydian, blues, etc...)

...then hit DO IT, and all the pads would be mapped to that scale. it would make great use of the limited pads because there would be no 'bad' notes. everything would be in tune. and since the pad midi notes are stored with the PROGRAM, you could switch to different keys and tunings just by switching programs or tracks (if you put a different PROGRAM on each track).

Actually that's how I do it, it's ok if you just have a few notes you wanna set, but if you have some complex sequence, say 32 notes and you wanna "midi chop" it, then with the above method it's going to take you a while.

Ye I was also thinking about this. Not sure tho how difficult it would be to implement.

Another idea that I had was a midi learn type function:

For example the user activates "midi learn", selects a pad and presses a key on external midi keyboard connected to the MPC. Now the MPC assigns the note from the external keyboard to the selected pad. This is much faster than changing multiple pads, one at a time, with the data wheel.

Just use track to pattern then pattern to pad and also use copy paste the bits you want out to another track for other pattern that you want to save.
