mpc 500 freezes when i use the cf card

hi there, every time i insert a cf card in the mpc it makes a high pitched squeal and freezes. i also tried putting in new OS but of course you need a functioning cf card to complete the process. i thought maybe the cf cards i used previously were corrupt and that was the problem. so far i used the akai 2 gb it came with and a sandisk ultra. i decided to purchase a completely new akai 2 gb card which i used today and had the same problems. can't even reach the format page in the load function. everything immediately freezes when the cf card is in. don't know what the deal is and can't find any info online. thought maybe i could solve this problem by formatting in my mac archive utility but that doesn't work either. i held down shift and powered on the mpc to run the new OS with the card in but screen just read : NO COMPACT FLASH! still got lots of internal memory so i know that can't be the issue. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your time!

one of the pins inside the flash card drive is bent. look inside the drive with a flashlight or something and you'll see... if you're lucky you'll be able to bend it back into place... you gotta slide those flash cards in GENTLY...

pretty sure my i/o error is due to bent pin.

im going to try fix this weekend. worst case i'll buy a new CF card, break it open, and replace the internals of my beat card to get it running.

is yours making weird noises or having the screen glitch out at startup, peeping tom?? you hadn't mentioned that before and those are the usual problems a bent pin will cause... in your case, it may just be the flash card... i'd still try to access it with a usb flash card reader to see if you can back it up... the original poster, on the other hand, seems to definitely have a bent pin inside the card drive...

hah! it totally worked! i just use a skinny allen wrench and bent 2 pins back in place and now it works just fine. thank you so much. your a life saver. time to get to work.
