There are situations where it makes sense. I could imagine being on the road and wanting to work on a mix on my laptop without bringing the hardware along. I get the argument for having a dongle, but that could also be accomplished supplying an actual portable dongle that could be plugged in instead of the hardware.

It seems like "mixing on the road" is a popular thing to say in these forums.

im skepticle

peeps aint gonna be on the plane and pulling out maschine or a beat thang

but yeah maybe the mpc studio is sleek enuff to rock on the plane but if ur at mixing stage u woulda prolly already exported the waves into ur daw to the requirement to run the ren software is pretty much a mute point..

but a u know software gets cracked as well the ren software so that may eliminate this restriction.

Yeaah offcourse, didnt you know that most of the members on thiis forum
are fullfledged producer/ dj/star who are always on the move gig after gig,
show after show and they are goin by plane or by tourbus.

Man, when ""I am on the road",
I be driving a '78 Rasta Masda,
an keep my eyes on da road,
not on a mpc.

That's my point. Having your hardware/software combo still useable on a laptop without the hardware means you could break it out on a plane if you felt like it.

Aren't they selling the Ren/Studio as though you can use them as a DAW?

Or just, like, people with regular jobs that involve a bit of travelling which involves a lot of tedium so hey why not spend some of that time on one of your hobbies?

As of now, that is probably not going to happen based on the info reported. Add it to the growing list of feature requests

They are selling the Ren/Studio as an integrated system that can be used inside of a DAW. If it was just going to be another DAW (Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo/Cubase, DP, etc), they probably wouldn't bother creating teh MPC Ren/Studio plugin so you can use it within another DAW.

If all was true then people would have been using mpd24 with guru or some other combos on the greyhound bus nevertheless a plane. I don't see anyone using even a mirko maschine in the process. But I do see iFly getting a lot of usages along with iMaschine.

Alot this is just pure speculation if you remember the 1k, 500, and the exsomething drum machine was meant to be portable solutions and guess what? They are mostly used for stage. If you want a real portable music making program to do it all in the box no dongle, no controller need and you can do it from the keyboard then get Ableton Live cuz people have been using it on planes, trains, and stages for years. Loops and grooves but midi sequencing without a controller is timeconsuming and boring.

Just going by the pitch on the akai site: "Works alone as your main DAW or works seamlessly with your current studio as a VST/AU/RTAS plugin". Not that I'm expecting a fully functional DAW out of it.

Yeah, I use Ableton, and portability is a feature that I like. And it's a feature that would be slightly broken if your project includes a VST that requires a bulky piece of hardware to be attached. I could see that being particularly annoying for stage use - it would be a pain not being able to tweak parameters of the VST with a more portable controller.

I always use Ableton with Apc40 I couldn't live without it anymore with Ableton. Automapping is a blessing indeed. Apc40 or the midi mpc20 takes ableton software to new heights beyond just mouse clicking and computer keypad punching. Virtual knobs, pads, sliders, and parameters mean little if you the operator have to mouse around despite the power software offers in standalone application. A well integration system like apc40 with ableton and maschine with its system beats the rest.

I got that. The MPC Ren is more a MIDI sequencer than a DAW by today's standard. There are no audio tracks among other things.

No self-respecting MPC will be free of greasy fingerprints.

coolderb wrote:remember when the beat thang was announced the specs of that ****?? it blew everything away, but from what ive heard since its dropped is it sucks, it starts bogging down once you get over 6 tracks going together, my point is that you dont really know how anything is till u officially try it, in my mind maschine comes in for the win cause they did it first and their **** works. yea, maschine doesnt support multicore right now and that is ****, and their sequencer is lame and their software is lightyears behind reason6 but its still out there and works good for the most part.. sometimes the specs can be great, but the **** can still be wack and ive learned just from being on the phone with akai/numark not to trust them..

When the Beat Thang hardware first came out it did suck.I tried one out and returned it a couple of days later because it was too buggy. However, after reading and seeing demos. of it with updated firmware, I decided to give it a 2nd chance. I'm glad I did. Since I bought it about a month ago there have been about 5 firmware updates that have fixed bugs and provided new features such as multitrack wav export. I have even discovered features that weren't even advertised such as the ability to use 64Gb SD cards which I bough for less than $50US:) While it is not a true all-in-one studio centerpiece/DAW, it is a versatile, portable, standalone beatmaking tool that is fun to use and getting better everyday.

The Beat Thang looks like the real deal with those updates they came out with. Especially that export feature where you can export your beat in a folder to import into your DAW.

If I were a Gear Slut I probably would have to cop one. Too much gear messes up my workflow though.
