Its a sequencer yeah. It says so on the box. Sequencers are a particular type of midi gear. maybe you didnt know what you bought JJ has opened it up extensively for a DAW enviroment that is a norm today. Music Production Centres and Midi Production Centers where the 'DAW' of those times. the thing that controlled everything else but could also be slaved and be controlled. -

ask your self is the control i am using a qlink to realtime or a external synth, or midicontroller. This will help you find it.
Midi CCs will be in midi control window. Realtime in step sequence window. I think you will find that the JJOS matches international spec per midi and so the CC71 and CC74 affect the filter resonance and cutoff of that track to effect the samples in the program. SO in fact this means that midi CC data effects that track only because of this right. follow me. Its same as realtime data but it is not the same as realtime data. I spose in hindsight I can see how you are confused.
Im not talking about recording midi though say for controlling a filter sweep on another synth. Its weird and am not sure how exactly he has done it, but you have the data there you just not found it yet. When you go MODE Pad 14 make sure it says all data at top, and in grid edit mode make sure to edit you go into midi mode to see midi cc data that just so happens to be affecting that channel but you should see both CC and realtime.

Since the bloody thing doesn't have knobs, I assumed that it would be excellent at handling control from an external device (or internally edited/written cc's)

this has been a hardcore request of many people here for a looooong time. i think the MIDI to BUTTON feature JJ introduced recently is JJ's way of trying to make this happen as much as he can.

i think it is just a basic cpu limitation that keeps this from being implemented. or maybe it just takes a huge low-level rewrite of the os. i seem to recall JJ stated something to that effect a while back (i think it was to Nym?), that it would take years to implement this. maybe it will make it's way into os 3.

it is a fact that the mpc 1000/2500 cpu is very weak, and can only process so many things at once. you start trying to control a bunch of parameters with incoming midi and timing, voice count, even other midi data being sent to external gear, is all going to start to suffer.

I start to see why its mostly used for hip hop
