new MPC vs old MPC

I have the option of an MPC2000XL (old), or an MPC1000 (new).

i cant decide between the two.

i have a mac for audio production running protools, and i have a set of tt's.

i live outside US, so i have to ship them.

I have a spare SCSI zip drive with 20 or so zip disks, and i can steal a 512 mb compact flash of my mother (shes a photographer, hence 512) so it should cost too much to get started on either.

but i cant find something definitive to tell me which road to take!

If you're going to use your computer extensively.. get the 1k....

im thinking this way:

i can plug my tt's mixer's out into the mpc's in, and record samples.

can i trim my samples on the 1k?

and is there anything else you think i need to be considering?

also what should i expect to pay for a 1k, i've seen 876 $ which i think is as cheap as i can find.

lower than $1k most likely should be good.
I've always seen around $890.

I would get the 1k if you are going to use your MAC alot.
USB connectivity will be a plus.
NEW mahcine would be a plus also (no second hand worries).

I'd get the 1k regardless if I was using the computer or not, I got two friends with them and I think it's better than my OG 2k

Computer => MPC1000?

USB should not be a factor in getting the MPC1000. Everyone suggests getting a separate card reader anyway for the MPC1000 since that makes it easier to transfer. MPC1000 + PC reader = same type of connectivity/transfer as the former MPC's.

Connectivity to a computer for some people is a big factor.
Just for the ease of transferring files if they so wish.

True, the extra Cf reader though is not needed.

Everyone is not at a level of skill where they can work
other transfer methods as easy as a USB connection.

$1k is easier on the pockets also.

BUT, me, myself, knowing what I know, I would still choose the XL
all over again if I had to.

what are the actual difference's between the two?

i think the compact flash thing would be wwwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaayyyyyyy helpful for me.
even though i think i'll be chopping long samples on the sampler itself.

i'll cut all drum sounds on the computer, using logic or something.

CF is nice to use and has no moving parts. The media of choice for many.

according to the most recent MPC-Tutor newsletter, akai's puttin out a 2000XL with a cf reader built in. so, if u can wait til it's released (i have no clue when this is), u might be able to get the best of both worlds in one shot.

and it has a ZIP drive and no CF apparantly, which sucks.

and its waaaaaaay out of my budget anyway.

No. You need a phono pre-amp still. A DJ mixer or a dedicated phono pre-amp will do the job. You can even make one if you are familiar with componentry.

Good point. I wouldnt base my decision on the USB feature.

No there is a unit coming out that actually has a CF reader. I think "mpc3000" who i just quoted was one of the first to install a CF reader/multi-reader in their MPC2000 so its interesting to see Akai remarketing the MPC2000XL in this way. Their marketing budget would be better spent doing some OS updates in my humble opinion.

As for wether id suggest you buy an MPC1000 or an MPC2000XL id be a little hesitant... ive used a 2000XL for many years and i have played gigs week in and week out, even international tour with it and no problems. The 1000 would be more compact, but to be honest it comes down to this...

...I prefer "banging out samples" on the 2000XL, maybe just because im used to it. Id have to finally say go for the MPC1000 then... its smaller, has FX, is most likely to be supported by Akai longer. The ability to sample its own outputs is nice too. From my experience i work the same on both units in terms of work-flow so no biggy there.

i would say its as simple as what ur gonna use to trim ur samples... if u r gonna use ur computer to process ur samples get the 1k, i have the 2kxl which i use to trim and chop and basically everything and then i just dump the tracks into cubase and mix..

me too. The buttons are arranged differently...thats a big differance. Well if youve never owned an mpc, its not, but The button layout on the xl is fast. Not so much on the 1000 as there are more sub menus.

I chop all my samples on the mpc2xl....never use the computer except for recording; and it works fine.

but like guzman said, if you want the computer to edit samples, then go with the 1k.

Basically i think the 1k is for like, computer users, that when it comes down to the final beat, its all layed out and ready to be sequenced inside the mpc1k.....and they can take it live, or take it to a studio, and just bring the mpc.
