Besides whats the advantage in throwing a sample into an Apogee and then back to the MPC??

Most soundcards do have pretty sh*tty convertors! Dunno why this is as they are the most important thing on the card. RME has good ones, Yamaha to, Akai also (samplers, so I guess the soundcard has good ones too). But E-mu/ creative, Tascam, M-audio, Digidesign etc f*cks up your mix! Like Behringers. Muddy, muddy mix
You hardly hear this with just one take, however when you record every sound seperate, your mix is wasted.

what are you basing your judgment upon ?

I was thinking about a Tascam FW 1884 ( http://www.tascam.com/Products/FW-1884.html ), do you think its converters are wack ?

I donno about that FW1884 man.. I am using a Tascam US428 and it has not the best convertors. I would go RME. Even if I had the money for a HD3 system, I would still prefere an RME.

well, comparing brands' sound quality based on their $400 products seems a bit strange to me....

Yeah.. thats why the cheap ESI cards from 99 dollars uses the same convertors as a 10000 dollar HD3 system! Go figure..

I would normally record thru my Apogee then into my Mac & then into my MPC4k using AkSys. Yes, a decent converter is very pricey unfortunately. RME's are pretty good. If you're only prepared to pay $500 max then I'd forget about buying a separate converter and use your MPC analogue input/s. Besides, some people actually like/prefer the sound of MPC converters for drum sounds.

I would use my externals converters record to DA-98 (or ADAT)/MAC P-T, TO MY DAT when COMPLETED A MIX.

When recording a sample I will use my PRÉAMP converter thru my MP (or others samplerz).

By the way, the Apogee MiniPré goes by 650euros and have REAL good converter.
