What methods do you use to get the most out of bass samples from vinyl? (Pre DAW - MPC only).

For those who don't have access to, or choose not to use synthesizers (hard or soft) for their bass lines, your relying on bass or bass line samples from your preferred medium - Vinyl, CD/MP3, instrument. The bass your sampling might be part of a rhythmic loop or a solo arrangement.

Apart from general EQ/filtering and compression, another method I use is I split the sample into a HI and LO pass filter. Prob the best way to really isolate the bass line from the original sample. Split the sample again into a mid-range or band-pass filter and you have complete control over 3 primary frequency ranges.

Lately I'm playing my bass live into Guitar Rig, sampling that into an audio track, jamming with the beat.

From that point I can apply the same tweaking I'd use for samples from wax.

I usually Pitch-down -12, quick-attack, release to taste, Low pass, on single notes a quick saw-down lfo modulation to filter to enhance transients, assign to aux-out=>input thru and low pass again... re-sample/chop if needed.

Having the bass-line re-routed into the input thru allows for doubling the filter stage, which can achieve extreme real-time modulation and since the signal can then be routed to a compressor the options are vast. One can always re-sample later (and repeat the process with other settings on LFO/filters/effects).

Is Guitar Rig good for bass amps?, I can borrow a bass guitar but have no amp so if I can use guitar rig go and buy that.

Crosscheck Guitar Rig against AmpliTube: they really got it all, you can't be deceived by industry standard.

I use them both and can't make a definite pick, I just have a few months experience thou.

Hit the usual suspects for "trial copies".

I'm not such of a crate digger so usually I record my synth bass and play with that.. I've had one bass loop from cd though, worked really well for one joint.

Oh yeah sometimes I like bit destructor on my bass.

To add to this...check out Ampeg SVX, same company as Amplitube but focused on bass.

I would do a low pass filter than resample that sound and eq that sample bring the bass frequencies up a lil mid..and depending on how it fits in the mix I adjust te high ends than resample that to free up the effect option in te mpc

I think your choice of primary monitors will also determine will play a part in getting a desired bass sound. Theres another thread in here about Pete Rock/Premo filtered bass. More or less this is what Im asking about.

the thing is with lpf if u do to much then there is not enought frequencies in the mid section to standout in the mix so u might need some drive or distortion to add frequencies or layer in another tone over the top.
