No, truly... don't let you be fooled, they have a slightly different set of features being from different generations and different sets of components, of course BUT none of them has an appreciable effect on the final sound, which would be dependent on the settings/tweaking you apply during the WHOLE process.

the sound differences are MINUSCULE. that should not be the deciding factor in your purchase.
and to be honest, even tho a lot of ppl claim they can hear the difference.........its bullsh*t. i mean, the difference may be audible but not to the point where one sounds better than the other, plus 'better' is subjective.

You know, when the 2000XL came out, people said it didn't have the classic MPC sound like the 3000 or the 60. Now people consider it to have the classic sound. In 10 years time, people will be moaning about the new 48 bit MPC8000-XL and how it hasn't got the cool retro 16 bit sound of the 1000.![]()
If you want a grimy hip hop sound, get an SP1200 or MPC60 for the gritty low bitrate sampling quality. Otherwise, get any MPC for the workflow it provides. You can get any sound you want from a 1000 and have the bonus of JJOS2XL. But TBH, I'd go for the 2500 with JJOSXL - better pads, tilting screen etc.
I currently have a 2500, an XL, a 5000, a 1000, a 500 and a 2000 all hooked up to the same system. All sound great and I doubt I could tell the difference blindfolded.
Don't get too focussed on mystical 'sound' and 'swing' - MPCs work because of the intuitive way they are designed and built.
And trust me, the XL does not have a 'gritty sound' - whoever told you that was talking rubbish.

32 voices is a lot, even with crossfade looping (2x voice use)
