Folk music for a noob?

I'll admit i've never dug out folk music before. What's some good folk music for a folk music noob? Someone who's into hip-hop and jazz and prog shit?

Check out some J.J. Cale. Not strictly folk music, but mixes in folk along with jazz, blues and country.
