Digital in on jacks?

the digital in/out (on the 8 outs expansion board) on my mpc has jack sockets... in the pictures i have seen of the 8 outs board the connections seem to be phono? any comments? is this an akai board or some other companies one? - i bought my mpc 2nd hand.

They should be SPDIF connects, one for in one for out.
They look like Phono jacks, and you can use regular RCA cable with them.
They do suggest digital SPDIF cable though, for cleaner transmission of data.

The same physical shape jack but the data traveling across/through it is purely digital.

thats ok then... i just didnt know that some of the boards had the connections on 1/4" jacks and some had them as phono/rca sockets.

It sounds like you have got the board made by the German company Mutec.

There are regular threads with the same enquiry here. It works fine with the right cable, but it seems a bit strange ....... I don't know of other gear that uses digital 1/4" jacks. SPDIF on RCA phonos, AES/EBU on 3 pin XLRs or the square optical connectors are the common ones.

When I ordered an Akai outputs board I was originally sent one of these Mutec ones, but I got it replaced because the item I had ordered was specified as the Akai-made board.

thanks for the info... so the mutec board uses 1/4" jacks then. can i use regular jack to phono cables to use the digital i/o on this board then?

I have the Mutec board as well. I used a digital cable with two rca's, and cut one off and replaced it with a jack. Normal jack to rca will work, but it's not recommended.
I may still have the manual and a wiringdiagram. If you need it i can go look for it and e-mail you a scan of it.

my 2kxl also came with a mutec 8out board (which in the meantime got replaced with a new Mutec 8out board 'cause the first one had all the outputs switched (1=2, 3=4 ,5=6 etc..)) I connect my stanton str-80 digital out (spdif) via a normal rca / jack cable and it works perfect.
