Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By kid collect Sat Jun 21, 2003 11:41 pm
recokon this should be an easy one for somebody to shed some light on

I want to chop a single track it to part first bar second etc...
but the i want to change the pads that go with each of the new tracks i've made ?

The story so far...
I've layed down track 1 of part of a 4 bar sequence and then copied the 1st 2 bar into track 2 and the 2nd 2 bars into track 3, So basically i track 1 in to parts I want to have the first part stay the same but want to change the pad souns that plays on the second part ??

Am i heading in the right direction ?What do i do next ?

thanks

Well seeing that there have been 14 views on this, and no answer, I'm assuming that your question is confusing. I tried to figure it out, but no luck. If I'm reading it right you have duplicated a sequence? and you want to have the duplicate have a different drum pattern?...I think I'm way off, but it not let me know and I can answer that for you. confused, lol.

Hi
 Right let try and explain this again sorry for the confusion

If you record into the mpc by hitting a drum pad eg a bass drum sound, the you can play back the midi the mpc plays the sound back and paramenters of the recording. Does that make sense ? i'm not sure i'm using the right terms to describe what i'm discussing !!!

I want to divide the recorded track data into 2 new track and then assign different pads and sounds to each track.

I know i can record a track and by going into the drum program I can assign a different sound to the pad, But i want assign the track data to a completly different pad and sound ??

Hope this makes more sense sorry again.

I can think of two ways if you want to change the sound from one to another, if you want to layer them I have no idea.

Either change the sounds assigned to the pad you hit in the sequence, or change the midi note number assigned to the pad to the one that has the sound you want. Perhaps for layering the simultaneous option for the pad might get you where you want to go, although I don't think this will affect an already recorded sequence.

Hmmmm, so you want the same drum pattern on the new sequence, but different sounds without having to redo the whole sequence?.....if so, I'm really not sure how to go about that. I know MPC-Tutor knows, because on the first sound disc that was released it had that on there, which I have never gotten into. Maybe try him out.

Thanks for the ideas

Evs is right it's a kind of laying effect i'm after so i can copy the kick drum pattern and use the copy with a different sound so that it shadows the original "like the making bassline tip in production tips"

But maybe the tutor can shead some light ?

The easiest way is to use a second program. So track 1 is, say, your bassline that uses DRUM1 - assigned to this DRUM1 is a bass program.

Then copy the MIDI note data from track1 to track 2, change the DRUM to DRUM2 and assign a second program (say, a piano program) to DRUM2. Now track two will play the same notes as track 1, but with a different sound. Of course, your piano program has to laid out in the exact same way as the bass program (i.e same notes to the same pads).

Well if you want to layer the different sounds with the same hits you can go to

program

pick drums

find the 1st sound/pad

move cursor down to mode
(should be on normal)

then change it to SIMULT

you now have the option to trigger 2 more sounds/pads when ever you hit the pad of your 1st sound...

Dang, I thought I brought back a thread from the dead with a what was it 7 year bump I think. You got a 9 yr bump here. Hope he figured it out by now though, lol. If not he should given up years ago.

ok i gotta step out the darkness for this one - even if it is 9 years old this tip works wonders and ive never heard anyone else do this.

so you've got a track recorded and it's all pad a1 midi note 35.
but you want to copy this track and have it also play pad a2 midi note 36.
copy and paste the track to a new track.
now change the track mode from DRUM to MIDI.
perform a transpose operation of +1 to go from midi note 35 -> 36.
now change the track mode back to DRUM.

boom. you've just shifted your midi DRUM sequence data, even though the mpc claims that you cannot do it.
the mpc will not let you transpose a drum track, so by changing it to midi, then back, it can be done. where it gets complicated is if you try to do more than one note at a time and your midi note numbers are all over the place (as they are by default on a 2k). in this case, i do it one pad at a time, using a copy function and copying only one pad to a new 'working' track...i can then merge these tracks back together later.

909th post - i guess i'll save my celebration for 1000th.

nice one tape deck! I was gonna suggest checking the step edit screen to see if it lets you change the note on to a different midi note... but the transpose seems to be way faster!
also, you are absolutely right about the midi notes on the 2000 classic being all over the place by default. Sometimes I wonder why they did that.
