MPC5k Pad Mute Issue

Okay here are the steps. Make a song, enable pad mute recording. Goto the track mute screen. Start the recording, whatever you start recording will delete whatever is on the track that was selected (not usual behavior for all other MPC models). The work around is to select an unused track, but still, all this data gets recorded into track 1 which when that was selected originally, it over wrote the data (very abnormal). The fun aint over yet. Now that your unused track is selected for pad mute recording, start the record, and record some pad mute events. Now lets assume you did not like how it came and you want to just overwrite that recording. On all the other MPCs you would just hold record, press play start, and you can immediately start over writing your last pad mute event recording. But you will quickly realize that even though you did not choose to start an over dub recording, it starts over dubbing the data, even though you chose rec & play start, which on any other MPC, just over writes it (as it SHOULD). Work around: go into the step sequence data for track one, find all the pad mute events and delete them. WHY IS THIS LIKE THIS? THis is the supposid FLAGSHIP MPC!

Preaching to the choir, mate. This entire sub forum is mostly topics about MPC5000 bugs. Lots of outstanding bugs, no OS update for over 4 years. Won't be the flagship when the Ren hits the streets.

I advise you go back to your MPC2500, pay for JJOS XL and live a stress free life.

After using the 5000 for a few more days, I am starting to iron out all the issues I was having. This particular one was buggin me out, because I was not getting a hold on how this whole thing worked. The legacy MPCs like the 1000, and 2500 work in a very different way when it comes to pad mute recording. You basically need to start on an unused track (lets say 10), and whatever pad mute is recorded, say it is a snare that you have on track 5, thats the track you will find the step edit data on for 'trk mute'. You can then easily move or change these entries. I can see why they went this route, because on the old legacy mpcs when your converted sequence from a song reaches the end of the sequence and loops, it would delete all of your pad mute data. This prevents that and can just leave it play in a loop and immediately start over dubbing more pad mutes. Not to mention the real time quanitize up to 16th notes for the pad mute events. That is GREAT. I hope this post helps others understand how the 5k works when it comes to pad mutes. I thought this was a big let down for me, but after understanding how the machine works, its pretty far from any type of issue now. Would just be good if they had a quick over write record for all the pad mute events at once like the legacy mpcs. Aside from that, undo is just fine . No worries here about this one anymore. CASE CLOSED!

There's certainly a learning curve for some of the features, and it can be overwhelming, especially when trying to decide what is a bug and what is just a feature you don't fully understand yet.

Yea exactly. The thing is that this thing has a bad wrap. Almost like pitbulls lol. We can thank Just Blaze for starting this. But he was probably a heavy contributor to the reason we have OS2.0. Maybe he can make another rant about 2.0 lol. Definitely a learning cuve to the new algorithms used to do various procesess as they are very different from the legacy models.

Did you ever get your hands on any of the tutorials for the MPC5k. Like beat making on the MPC 5000? I had got the one for the 2500 which helped me here and there (mostly learned it on my own just like this one), but they are still nice to have as they give you some lil tricks for editing. To go ahead and get the one for the 5k when I just got the one for the 2500 a few weeks ago is a bit much. I got mad samples and stuff I could trade up if your interested (and many other things).

With any piece of hardware ive had, I have always had that moment years later where I say "holy crap, I had this for years and didnt realize I could do that." lol. Wna make sure all those moments happen soon after I bought the unit lol. When I get home I will definitely look for that, cool deal!
