The MPC Ren review will be available soon but will be another thread.
I don't think anybody knows enough about the Ren to draw a comparison. I will say this though. JJ has way more credibility than the new Akai. He really supports his OS and is in touch with the MPC user. Plus the attention to detail like the Paino Roll like interface with the Midi Notes. when you hit a pad it displays the name of the sound. The seamless midi control of sound modules and the ability to turn individual pads into chords. The Modulation matrix is even top notch.
We shall see how the Ren compares. Quality control isn't really a strong suit of the new Akai though.
But the JJ OS is still not bug free. So if Akai releases an OS with bugs but releases frequent OS updates which adds new features, fixes the bugs and add new ones...that's ok?
The new Akai just doesn't have credibility and they don't really deserve all of the anxious anticipation and demand that they're receiving for the Ren. They dont have a history of making quality products. Look at all the parts issues that MPC 1k and 2500 users experienced. MPCStuff.com and VSTservice.com are able to make a living off it. If you look in the 5K forums it seems like half the threads are regarding bugs or issues. Top that off those users have paid close to 2000 dollars on the machine, some paid even more than the reduced price and a AKAI rep said they have no plans on releasing an OS update to address those issues.
JJOS made the 1K and 2500 incredible products. If he was able to work on an OS for the 5K I'm sure the 5K would be incredible, but without the JJOS the new AKAI MPCs leave a lot to be desired. I hope the Ren is an awesome product, but we'll see.
Actually the 2500 is a pretty good product even without the JJOS. It was a necessary upgrade from the 2KXL. CF Reader, HD, and CD/DVD drive, USB CPU connectivity...JJOSXL just took it to a whole new level.
