Automating Trimming The Ends Off Samples

I've been making a few multisample programs for both my MPC5k and Z8 from a VST on my computer using Extreme Sample Converter. I've got it set to 8 seconds per sample, which is how long the bass notes are, but the high notes are only a few seconds long. In the interest of saving memory, is there anyway to cut off the dead space on the samples automatically? I have some software, the 5k and the z8, if that helps anything.

cant u just trim them up to free up memory? if memory wasnt an issue i'd say just use amp release, but yea, why cant u trim it down from 8 seconds?

Adobe Audition have a DELETE SILENCE button but this will work only with one waveform at a time. You can copy all samples into one and then use this function or you can record the function as a macro and do a batch processing with a complete folder but this is way to much work to fix your problem.

The easier way is Reaper. It has the function "dynamic split"" that put a gate (and/or transient detector) on the samples and cut away the silence.
Drag & drop all the samples into one track -> select all the items -> rightclick on one of the items -> Item processing -> dynamic split. You'll have to put work in the correct settings tho but you can actual SEE whats happening while you tweak.

But with all that said...what kind of BASS sound is 8 seconds long? You should use the loopfunction and cut this samples to something like 2 seconds. Thats in most cases MORE than enough especially for bass samples.

^^ amen - those sounds could likely be looped.
not to mention, you can get a surprising amount of mileage out of reducing the sample count and using your samplers resampling - not too far from the original pitch.

you want to talk about saving memory? cut the number of samples in half, so you hear root note, then +1 note up from that is the same sample, then a new sample on the next key, and you've just cut your memory usage IN HALF.

you will likely not notice the difference.

sox is great for batch-processing, but you've got to get yer nerd goggles out to handle it.
logic has a function that sounds like what piper is talking about in reaper, called 'strip silence'.
