Does anyone step sequence here to make beats?

I like modplug tracker. I like the concept of trackers because its kind of more oriantated on hardware. A standalone program with sampler/sequencer/fx instand "mute groups" (tracks can only play 1 sample at a time) and kind of limited but also very nice for crative people to deal with theese limitations.
I've heard really comlex tracks you would never think it was made on a tracker software when there still was a big scene in 2000 (I don't know if there is still a scene). I will search on my HD and upload them so you can listen and watch how its done. <- Another plus for the tracker concept. Its an open fileformat. You can play for example IT (impulse-tracker file) or .mod files (module file) as audio on winamp or other media player but you can also load the same file to the tracker and see the elements and how its done.

when i finally got a hardware sampler - i couldn't believe how far behind the technology was in terms of sample manipulation.

even today a hardware sampler cannot do some things that a tracker could...but they are just different approaches so its all good.

I really need to try and give a tracker ago simply for experimentation then.

When I first played with it on the family Atari STe 1040 I was so confused at what it was and how it worked.

its because they can be incredibly complicated.

at the most basic, a tracker works like any number of monophonic samplers, but for each step you have control over volume, pitch, and often some effects (think parameter-locks on elektron gear).

then there is stuff like buzz which takes it to the next level, incorporating a modular, graphic environment with fx and synthesizers - not just samplers. the samplers it does have all do unique things - i really like the probability machine and the fx built into some of the more advanced trackers (utrk, mtrk).

you have to like to use hex-code though

Skale used to be a good tracker, not perfect as FTII was but still...

Back in the day all the songs that we would break dance to were step sequenced. I remember Herbie Hancock (classically trained musician and jazz master) even made a few step sequencer jams. Then there was the classic Harold Faltermeyer jam "Axel F" from Beverly Hills cop. That was the 80's sound TR units...then of course there was "Beat it" Quincy Jones.
Nothing wrong with step sequencing, especially since now you can swing it in so many machines. I just bought a MC909 not too long ago and you can easily rock a party with that step seqeuncer live. To me that is the prefect combination Akaim MPC and a roland MC909.

God dam buzz is awesome - Tapedeck, are you running it on an old machine/old windows or something?.. ive been enjoying sun-vox lately.. and ive been pretending that all the fx and routing parts dont exist in it, and just using the sampler instrument - kind of makes it feel a little bit like fast tracker II (cos it looks so much like it) and then i get all nostalgic.

new buzz is actually pretty stable on every system i have tried.
i run it on a 2004 windows machine and also in a virtualbox xp machine on os x. aside from slow boot-up time, i don't really have any issues and new buzz is very forgiving (as far as buggy machines / bmxs go).

this inspired me to go hunting for a rewire compatible tracker and try a few of the others i havnt used yet.. tried madtracker and renoise..

madtracker - nice and simple tracker, but i did find controlling it a bit chunky

but Renoise won hands down just for ergonomics.. the way the mouse wheel works depending on what window you're in is awesome..hands down the best tracker ive ever used - cant wait to go through the manual and get pro at it. reminds me of a tracker version of earlier FLstudio before it adopted more DAW-ish features.
