Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By dulla Thu Oct 28, 2004 5:47 pm
Hello. I have an mpc2000xl running with pro tools le on mac os panther. I have the mpc connected to the software via midisport 2x2. When i press play on the mpc and record to a midi track, only my note and timing info is passed. I cannot get any edited parameters from my mpc to pass (pitch, decay, attack etc.) I have set my input filter in PT to accept this info. (all). Is there any way to do this? Or do the notes have to be re-edited in pro tools? pls. help!

Pitch, decay, filter, etc, are all parameters that edit the internal sounds on pads in the MPC. But, unless you are controlling these during a given sequence, you're not sending that info via midi. Do you have live changes to those parameters that are recorded on the MPC? Cus if not, it won't record anything aside from what's sequenced.

no they are all pre-recorded. it's not a big deal and i can record the mpc as audio in pro tools, but when i want to do a quick mix of everything, it's a bit tedious to mix on mpc, record to pro tools, and mix again on pro tools..if i were to sync the mpc via midi time code, would my mpc sequences be able to start and stop during certain times in my pro tools session? not really sure how mtc works. any suggestions? thanks.

"not really sure how mtc works. "

The homeland for the MPC2000XL has this info already, mpc2000xl.com

On what you said before, you may know this already, but: If you leave your channels the same from your 'virtal' mix inside tha mp, you gonna get poor levels in protools. If your sending the audio to a DAW like protools, it's good to get the hottest levels into it, then mix inside the computer. Otherwise, you mixing alot of air and noise. Like if you got a pad volume in the mpc about halfway, you are sending half of the potential signal to pt, which includes alot of residual junk.
Yeah, you can have seqs. start and stop, etc. It really just updates a lock via the midi, but your playing the actual sequences you layed strait out of the mpc. Ima pm you the regular steeze for syncing them up. Even if you don't have the 8 outs, you can independantly track as many sounds as you need to pt. You wanna multitrack right, not just a stereo mix?
From what you sayin it sounds like you wanna mix virutal in the MPC, let it run synced to protools, which will be recording and playing back somthing else, like vocals, etc. But, lemme know

yeah i am mixing inside the mpc for my drum tracks. but lets say for instance i have already recorded my mpc track(s) into PT and i want to turn up my kick. i don't want to go into my mpc turn up the kick and re-record into pt and realize that i turned it up too loud. i know this could be bypassed if i record the kick or individual sounds on indiv. tracks, but that is crazy! i need an easier way to mix. thats why i thought syncing up the sequence with pt would work as nothing would be recorded in pt until the mix in the mpc is ready. how do you suggest i do this? i am multritracking with other audio tracks in pt also. thanks so much!

I don't have the 8 outs on my MPC anymore so I have to record track by track, it takes a lil' longer but it's really noT that hard at all. It helps a lot if you sequence everything in the MPC on it's own track, kick on 1, snare on 2, etc, etc. Then you can just solo the track, trigger the MPC from PT, record the track, move onto the next one.

Now if you have the 001 or 002 I strongly suggest getting the 8 outs for the MPC as this will make everything much easier.

I use midi beat clock to trigger the MPC when tracking into PT, I set the MPC to receive MMC and PT controls the playback, stop, ff, rw controls on the MPC.

If you wanna take advantage of how easy it is to mix in PT that is exactly what you shoud do. trupro is absolutely right about getting the strongest possible signal into PT, once you have al the tracks in PT you can mix the tracks however you want. Also, you mentioned re-recording into PT only to realize you turned it up too loud, watch those meters, if they ain't clippin' it ain't too loud.
