Swinging on the MPC-60....

I've been using the MPC-60II and S950 for 6 months now and have been troubled by the SWING function. Back when I owned the SP-12 turbo I would always program sequences in double the original tempo in order to increase the resolution of the machine. It also introduced an entirely new feel to the overall sound of the drum sequences I would program. I'm wondering whether or not it makes a difference in the MPC-60II. For the longest time i've been using a doubled original tempo (ie 92 bpm = 184bpm) and lately it seems as if it has no increased effect. My reasoning is to further humanize my patterns as I've mentioned before. Any professional advice would greatly help as this probably only applies to hiphop production. For examples, lets say we start out with 67% on a beat that is 90bpm. What ways can I improve the overal vibe of this beat? Consider the step edit and real time edit functions.

u can always turn off quantizing if you arent feelin the groove..

another note..

ive never bothered doublin the bpm on the mpc, for hiphop i havnt found any need to.. maybe when i dabble with jungle maybe ? who knows...

but for what i been doin, i try to get my sounds where i want them 1st i wouldnt start at 67% myself..., i start with triplets then add swing where i find it needed

thanks for the advice....but for me i like to work off of quantize to ensure the timing is fairly correct and not erratic....i rarely use the metronome and what i like to do is go back in and use real time recording/editing to add the humanized swing but still.....if you use an sp-12 (00) my question might be more comprehensible.

I don't use swing much at all, but it is about matching the feel of your pattern to the feel of different swing settings. Program a simple kick snare hi hat on 16ths then try all the swings to get some refference to the numbers. for the sp deep swing, try 67.

I double tempo all the time, I like it better than 32nd note quantize at original tempo.
