for u audio experts, i need sum help

i have a sony vaio laptop and it doesn't have any rca outputs. Just firewire, mic jack, headphone jack, and usb. I want to get that m-audio firewire 410 but for now I just have my laptop connected to the receiver by a cable that connects to the headphone jack and spreads into the red and white rca's that connect to the receiver. The problem is that I get sound out of both speakers, but it's only the right channel coming out of both. It's hard to do my post-mpc production like that. Can anyone explain?

You probably got he wrong cable. Sounds like it's a mono to 2x rca.
But even in stereo, it'll still sound like sh^t. Save up for a good soundcard.

check the 1/8th end of your cable (the end that plugs into your laptop). there should be 2 black stripes on it (1 for left, 1 for right). if there's only 1 stripe, then u got a mono cable which would explain the same channel in both speakers.
