I've bought the MPC1000, and have install JJOS2XL just playing with all the settings! I feel like I've made the choice and gear lust didn't get the better of me in the end!
MPC1000 sounds nice and warm, loving the pads compared to the PadKontrol I was using, and I've been happily moving between windows, modes, and tracks... just need to learn how to stitch it together, I've ordered some ram, from amazon, also a cf card.... just need to get christmas presents for my family out of the way and then i can see whats left to buy the password for this amazing os,
thanks to all of you for your helpful replies, im not dissing the MPC5000 and you never know if the economy picks up i may buy one next year! but for now im excited about my new box of tricks.....

I had a 1ooo a few years back and I loved it, excellent machine
didn't have the new pads but fixing the old ones was pretty easy
all I needed was some 2 sided tape
but those Akai OSs are pure asstastic, the JJ OS was a lifesaver for me since the old one would lose sounds/programs and rearrange things for no reason

If you want to make real songs use akai os. Akai Os has the spirit.
In jjos there are too many options and detail, which will make you lose your way rather than guiding you to create a great song.

Hah ha ha... yeah, great troll. "Spirit" is right. That Akai disk formatting bug will turn your projects into ghosts for sure!
Props to the OP for avoiding new MPCs that only run Akai's garbage software.

Obviously, the member above is not English speaker (like myself), so I don't want to be hard on him. But I'd like to know that he/she means by "the Akai OS has the spirit"?
I guess Astro7 wanted to say was that JJOS's menu is too cluttered (and too many options)? (I don't know, I've never used MPC-1000, I'm just trying to guess.)

There are fanatics on both sides of the fence (more so on one side than the other). In spite of publicity and some flaws in the OS of the 5000, it is still a powerful unit and can accomplish equal to or more than what you can do with the JJOS (numerous threads with details). While heavily "supported" the JJOS has flaws and bugs as well. JJ fanatics first reponse will always be he 'fixes' them promptly and provides better support to these products than Akai. But the caveat is that his 'fixes' always results in new bugs. As a long time beta tester...this is nothing out of the ordinary. I am just telling both sides of the story.
If I was buying my first MPC and the 5000 and 1000 were my options....I would probably lean towards a 5000 than a 1000. If the JJOS is really appealing...I would certainly go with a 2500 over a 1000.

When I got my 2500 it was akai OS 1.23. It couldn't save to anything properly. It couldn't read the files it had just made. It thought that I really enjoyed seeing 'Wrong File Format' & 'Read Error' and all that sht. I did not manage to save one project, I thought akai had just robbed me.
I almost admire astro7 for his endurance in the face of such adversity.

This problem occured when attempting to save/overwrite existing files. I discovered this back in 2005 using OS 1.0 and avoided this by never overwriting existing files....never had an issue with my files being mangled or lost. Even when using the JJOS, it is best not to overwrite files.
