monitors, do i really need two of them?

with single monitor make sure to plug your other ear if you dont you'll start hearing things in stereo

1 monitor will always be better than 2 crappy computer speakers. should be good if ur lookin at makin simple club oriented trax, not so good if ur expecting people to listen to it on awesome home stereos.. but if u do go one you will have to double check everything (on your left and right) to make sure that an fx or something hasnt put something into stereo that your not hearing which could be a pain in the ass

man bite the bullet and get 2.. you'll need them eventually. they are pricey, some more so than others but worth every cent and more once you've got em.

i remember when i ordered my set of yamaha monitors online, one arrived on friday [along with both the stands] and the other monitor didn't arrive until monday... so i spent the weekend hearing stuff outta just one monitor... certain songs sounded real incomplete... i'd definitely advise getting a pair.

Unless you pan all your stuff directly down the middle or are monitoring for mono compatibility one speaker is not going to work.
It will work if you just want to hear your stuff but not if you are trying to mix or build any form of soundfield.

No pun intended...

But the lack of understanding audio principles will make you think of things like this, especially if it's within the realm of your audio intellectual knowledge.

No way your going to mix on one speaker and get a proper sound field or placement in a mix.

One speaker works for checking mono compatibility but no way you are going to effectively mix with one speaker.

You lose both the front to back and right to left depth of field.

The first response to this thread should of been:

I see the proposed logic, but do you only have one ear? I do a lot of sampling in mono too....but on vinyl, you can get drums if the left and instruments off the trigger n vice versa. Two decent budget monitors(Alesis m1 active USB) fir example will help keep you rom ear fatigue and muddy mixes. I do my mixing on 4 headphones and 3 monitors. If I have to master, I do it on one then listen on every other adio source but my monitors. Think of it this way, do you want to only have half the mix?
