Post your views and questions about the Akai MPC2500

I was wondering if anyone can help me out because this is doing my head in. Sometimes, in fact most times, when I'm working on my MPC 2500 a sample from one pad will canel out a sample from another. So if i've got a sequence running and record a synth and then try to add that to the sequence it doesn't play, or only a portion the sample will play. Does anyboby know why this happens and how I can stop it? I've seen some threads on here about the same problem happening with the 500.

Cheers.

are you one akai os or JJ os?

The chances are you have your program set to mono and not poly, meaning each pad will cut the others off when triggered.

If you have jjo os I can give you a step by step process on how to do this, but I forget how its done on akais os

Sound like your program is in mono. Page 78/85 in the manual. Goto Mode 7 - select the PARAMS tab and set play to POLY.

Can sometimes have phase cancelling issues with pads with very similar samples playing at the same time. But it doesn't sound like this is your issue from your description.

I think I figured it out, When I initialy turn on the mpc with the autoload off the program loads with the pads and play both set to poly, Now when i chop up my sample and assign it to my my pads(the auto chop then convert feature) as a new program, for some reason when i go back to the program window the play is set to mono but the pads are set to poly, so i switch the play mode to poly and the drum samples im using i also set those to poly, I record the drum loop with the drum samples set to poly and the play mode in poly, NO PROBLEM the loop sounds great and when i record the drum sounds each on thier own track it plays back perfectly, no more kicks erasing the snares I just laid down, AWESOME.

But now after I lay down the drum tracks I go back and set the pads with the samples/loop/chops to mono so i can have them cut each other off when im playing them. I lay down the sample chops on a new track to match my drums. But when I play it back when im done recording and i play the loop back and the drums still sound fine but the sample chops i laid down seem to be overlapping each other instead of cutting each other off even though i have those specific pads set to mono (play mode still in poly) How do i fix this or what am i doing wrong?

Also one last dumb question and ill leave it alone, Why does my empty autoload load the program with the pads and program play both set to poly, but when I chop up my sample and convert it to my pads and have them loaded in a new program (your supposed to do that right?) The pads are set to poly but the play mode is switched to mono for some reason when i create those samples in a new program.
Do i Have to go back and switch those settings everytime i load my samples to a new program? or is there a setting im not finding here that you can edit that so i dont have to go switch things back everytime i load samples into a new program?

Thanks for the time guys

**edit** sorry if i didnt explain that well, im tired and heading to bed lol

when you use the chop feature it will default your new program as MONO every time... so you need to manually change it if you need it as POLY. however, if you want the pads to cut each other off, don't make the program POLY... that's when you want MONO.

So if i record a basic drum pattern with the program and pads set to poly and i record each sound on its own track everything works fine

But if I do the same drum pattern with the program set to mono this is what happens:
I record the highthat on track one, no problem
I record the snare on track 2, no problem
I lay down the kick on track 3 and when i go to play it back i only hear the hihat and kick, but at that point if i switch the program back to POLY the loop plays as i recorded it. Do drum tracks always have to be set to POLY?

So I can make a drum loop with the program set to poly, but then my chops dont play properly. (overlapping)

If I make a loop with chops set to MONO I cant add drums?
Do I have to make 2 seperate programs? 1 for the drums and 1 for the samples?
Can you use 2 programs at the same time? I dont see how Im supposed to work around it, is there somthing im just compleatly missing?

I understand everything your saying, I just dont understand how they work together. Ill look through the manual again and see if I can find somthing.

Thanks for being patient with me man, I really apreciate the help, Im not looking for a handout answer Ive been reading the manual multiple times a day, I really just wanna get going, Ive been making beats for 10 years but have never owned a mpc, Like I said I read the manual daily and after owning the machine for about a week now I feel like I got alot of the funtions down, I just cant figure this one out!

EDIT** Ive tried setting the PROGRAM to POLY and the samples to MONO
ive also tried setting the program to MONO with just the chops set to MONO and the drum samples set to POLY, this doesnt seem to make a difference I either have the program set to POLY with the drums playing and the chops overlapping (even if i set each sample to mono) Or I have it in mono with everything playing all out of whack!

your MPC is not bugged... you need to use separate tracks... of course... no wonder you've got samples cutting each other off if you're trying to do everything within the same track and program... your drum program should be set to POLY if you want the drums to be able to overlap each other [a hi hat at the same time as a snare, etc]... it doesn't hurt to even go as far as having each drum sound on it's own track [for more control in the track mute options]... for example... track1= snare, track2= kick, track3=hihat, track4= main sample chopped up, track5= bassline, etc etc etc...

do yourself a favor and actually LEARN and UNDERSTAND what MONO and POLY actually mean rather than just guessing and switching between the two... it's not that hard at all.

First off crossings I'd just like to thank you for your patience with me, I am doing everything your saying I have everything on its own track and the prog set to poly, when I switch the chopped samples to mono, they still overlap, are you supposed to use seperate programs also? Or do you make the whole beat in the same prog? I understand what your telling me, and I think I'm doing it like you tell me, where . I going wrong?

yes, drum progams need to be set to poly, you can set the pads to mono if you want. if you set the program to mono it overrides the poly setting on the pads because a new trigger will cut off the previous trigger.. thats what mono does..

re-reading your post, its such an easy fix..

create a new program for your samples and set it to mono.. its that simple.. if you refuse to create a new program you need to learn how to utilize the pad mutes to keep your samples from overlapping.. or set your sample pads to note on and lay them down like that...

yes... you want separate programs for every different chopped sample you're using... 1 program for drums [which may be used on multiple tracks in order to separate the kick from the snare, etc]... the drum program will most likely be set at POLY so that the drum sounds won't cancel each other out... then another separate program on a separate track with a chopped sample... the chopped sample program i'll probably want as MONO so that the chops don't overlap eachother... etc etc... you'll get the hang of it soon...
