I just had the same shit going on here. Turned on the MPC and got an "SDRAM Error"! After i deinstalled the RAM with only the internal 16MB it gave me an "SODIMM Error"! After fiddling around with it (cleaning, checking all cables, etc.) it booted again, but right after the boot process it froze (button lights go off etc.). And now after resetting the firmware (keep "Erase" pushed while turning it on) it works again, even with the 128MB installed.
At that point i also reminded myself to disconnect ALL power cables when a storm and lightning impacts going on outside. So keep that in mind! You wont bother yourself that much when your TV dies, but you will when your music gear dies.
