LinnDrum II may never come out?
I've just checked Roger Linn's website, and I found this updated Linndrum 2 page. This is updated on October, 2011, so I totally missed it;

... LinnDrum II is still in development but given the recent focus on Tempest development, it's won't be coming soon. If you're looking for an amazing new drum machine and aren't focused on a purely digital product, please consider Tempest.


Roger Linn is really satisfied with Tempest (most demo clips on YouTube are really tight), which is a good thing. It would've been even more cool if it can load custom samples, but the more I found out about Tempest, I'm more impressed with this machine. To call Tempest analog drum machine is totally understatement, but this is programmable, multi-timbal analog synth with some digital samples built-in. The market is saturated with digital products anyway (MPC Ren, Maschine, etc.), I can see why Linndrum II is not really moving forward.

Now that LinnStrument seems to be really moving on (I wonder how they resolved the patent issue that Linn had with amazon.com. Amazon.com had bought out the company that had technology for the pressure sensitive pad, unlike Apple iPad's.)
Now, LinnStrument is really cool! I hope it'll be affordable.

This is what Linn implied around the Tempest launch. He's in no hurry but he will get to it at some point. He just is the kind of guy that works on what he's feeling at the moment which currently is Linnstrument. But at some point there will likely something that looks like the Tempest but is the second coming of the 60/3000. Tempest's sequencer is identical to the 60 according to Linn.

One must be patient with dealing with geniuses. :)

Maybe after Linnstrument he may feel good about the Ren leaving him with all of us who don't go Ren to be his entire customer base. Just this forum's members could make a Linndrum II a success as he uses the business model that Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim are following.

Well I wrote to Roger Linn concerning his Linn drum 2 and he has personally answered me:

Roger Linn:
LinnDrum II is on the back burner while I’m finishing LinnStrument development. When I do get back to LinnDrum II, it won’t be yet another 1990s sampling drum machine. If you want to get an idea of what it will be, look to the real-time performance operation of Tempest and the 3D gesture sensing of LinnStrument. Sampling has its merits but to be honest, I’ll somewhat bored with the sound being exactly the same every time it plays.

If you like retro sampling, I suggest Akai’s current MPCs. They seem to be good at repeating my 1980s design ideas.
